About Zimpraise

Zimpraise, also known as ZimPraise, is a Zimbabwean interdenominational praise and worship collective founded in 2006. Based in Harare, the group brings together Christian musicians and worshippers from different denominations with a shared commitment to gospel music, worship and evangelism. Rather than functioning as a conventional fixed-band lineup, Zimpraise has developed as a large and changing collective, allowing different singers, musicians and worship leaders to participate in its various projects and seasons.

The group was established through the vision of MacDonald “Macdee” Chidavaenzi, Joseph Madziyire and Garikai Ndanga, who wanted to create a platform that could unite Christians from different church backgrounds through music. Since its first recording in 2007, Zimpraise has grown into one of Zimbabwe’s most recognizable gospel music brands, producing numerous live recordings, annual seasons, hymn projects and collaborative performances. Its music combines contemporary praise and worship with Zimbabwean musical traditions and African rhythms.

Formation and Early Vision

Zimpraise was born out of a desire to bring Christians from different denominations together through music. The idea was particularly significant within Zimbabwe’s diverse Christian community, where worship traditions can vary considerably between churches. The founders envisioned a musical movement in which singers and instrumentalists could put those denominational differences aside and focus on collective praise and worship.

MacDonald Chidavaenzi, popularly known as Macdee, played a central role in establishing the group and producing its early recordings. Joseph Madziyire and Garikai Ndanga were also involved in the group’s formation. Madziyire later became its chief executive and one of the principal figures responsible for shaping its organizational and creative direction.

The name Zimpraise reflects the group’s Zimbabwean identity and its emphasis on praise. From the beginning, the collective’s purpose extended beyond making recordings. Its members viewed music as a vehicle for worship, evangelism and bringing people together, an objective that has remained central to the group’s identity.

The First Recordings and Musical Development

Zimpraise’s first project, Zimpraise Volume 1, was recorded in December 2007. The early project brought together established and emerging Zimbabwean gospel musicians, helping create a platform where singers from different backgrounds could contribute to a single worship movement.

The collective subsequently developed a model built around large-scale live productions. Instead of depending exclusively on studio recordings, Zimpraise emphasized the atmosphere of live worship, with large vocal ensembles, musicians, choirs and guest performers sharing the stage.

This approach became an important part of the group’s identity. Their performances combined energetic praise with slower worship sections, while their arrangements incorporated Zimbabwean musical characteristics alongside contemporary gospel. The result was a sound that could work both within church environments and on larger concert stages.

Growth and Rise to Prominence

During its first decade, Zimpraise expanded rapidly and became one of Zimbabwe’s leading contemporary gospel groups. Its growing catalogue included multiple seasons and live DVD projects, while its performances attracted audiences across Zimbabwe and eventually in other countries.

By the mid-2010s, the group had developed a reputation for large-scale gospel productions. Its work earned several awards, including recognition at the Zimbabwe Music and Arts Awards, Courageous Gospel Awards, Victors Awards and Zimbabwe Youth Achievers Awards. In 2014, Zimpraise was recognized as Touring Act of the Year at the Zimbabwe Music and Arts Awards, while it also received Best Group or Duo recognition in 2015.

The group’s growing influence was also connected to its ability to bring together different generations of Zimbabwean gospel musicians. Singers who later became prominent individually participated in Zimpraise projects, making the collective an important platform for developing and showcasing Christian musical talent.

Major Projects and the Seasons

One of Zimpraise’s defining characteristics is its series of numbered seasons. Rather than treating each album as an isolated project, the group developed a continuing sequence of live productions that allowed its musical identity to evolve from one season to the next.

Among the group’s important recordings are The Power Live, The Covenant Live, All About Jesus Live and Jesus The Greatest of All Time. The catalogue also includes a series of Hymns Night projects, which focus on traditional Christian songs while giving them contemporary Zimbabwean arrangements. Spotify describes the collective as having produced more than 13 seasons as well as four Hymns Night projects.

The group’s 2013 project The Covenant Live produced the song “Sungano,” which became one of its recognizable recordings. Other songs associated with Zimpraise include “Ndofara,” “Dai Asiri Jesu,” “Only You Be God,” “Mwari Muri Zuva Redu,” “Hakuna Zita,” “Mufudzi Ndiye Jehovha” and “Garai Neni.”

Musical Style and Cultural Influence

Zimpraise’s musical identity is closely connected to Zimbabwean culture. Although the collective performs contemporary Christian music, its arrangements frequently incorporate African rhythms, harmonies and traditional instruments. Zimbabwean musical elements such as mbira, hosho and marimba have been incorporated into some of its productions, creating a sound that distinguishes the group from more Western-oriented contemporary worship ensembles.

Language is another important part of its musical identity. Shona features prominently in the group’s repertoire, alongside English and other African languages. This allows Zimpraise to present Christian worship in a form that feels culturally familiar to Zimbabwean listeners while remaining accessible to audiences elsewhere.

The collective’s performances are also characterized by large vocal arrangements and energetic praise. Instead of centering the ministry on one permanent lead singer, Zimpraise allows different voices to emerge within its productions. This reinforces its identity as a movement rather than simply a conventional band.

Notable Members and Leadership

Because Zimpraise operates as a collective, its membership has changed considerably over the years. A number of Zimbabwean gospel singers have been associated with the group, including Carole Nyakudya, Cynthia Mare and Tatenda Rusike, while many other musicians have participated in its different seasons and projects.

Joseph Madziyire has remained one of the central figures in the group’s development. He became chief executive after returning from Australia, where he studied creative arts with a focus on music and film. His responsibilities have included creative direction, production and organizational leadership.

The group’s structure has allowed it to continually introduce new singers and musicians. It has also operated auditions and music-training initiatives designed to identify and develop new talent. In 2014, Zimpraise established a music academy intended to nurture young musicians, extending the group’s work beyond recordings and performances.

Zimpraise Legacy Network

In 2021, Zimpraise entered a new phase when the organization announced a rebranding as Zimpraise Legacy Network. The change reflected the growth of the organization beyond its original choir structure. Rather than ending the Zimpraise identity, the new structure was designed to create a broader platform for Christian musicians, groups and creative projects.

The Legacy Network was organized around several areas, including Zimpraise TV, Zimpraise Academy, Zimpraise Music and AfriPraise, while Zimpraise Kidz remained part of the wider organization. The new model was intended to support individual artists and groups through music production, distribution, marketing and other creative services.

This transition also reflected the changing nature of the Zimpraise brand. After more than a decade of large choir productions, its leadership sought to build an ecosystem capable of supporting a wider range of Christian creative work while preserving the original emphasis on evangelism and worship.

Recent Music and Continuing Influence

Despite the organizational changes, Zimpraise has continued releasing music. Its recent catalogue includes Jesus The Greatest Of All Time, Season 15, released in 2023, followed by The Love Project Season 16 in 2024. The latter includes songs such as “Hallelujah,” “Wandisimudza,” “Mukuru WevaKuru,” “Ndakomborerwa,” “Wait on the Lord,” “Jesu Mutsvene” and “Murudo Murudo.”

The group also continued exploring different musical formats in 2025. Hymns & Traditional Night 5 (Live) returned to the traditional gospel repertoire, while Street Preachers (AMAPIANO Edition) brought Zimpraise’s Christian message into the contemporary amapiano sound. The group also released an extended version of “Rumbidzo” featuring Manuchie and Patriq Noble.

In 2026, Zimpraise released “Mashoko Anesimba” on May 22, continuing its active presence in the gospel music space. The ongoing releases demonstrate that the organization remains capable of adapting its sound while retaining the worship-centered identity that has defined it since 2006.

Legacy and Impact

Zimpraise’s greatest contribution to Zimbabwean gospel music lies in its ability to turn interdenominational cooperation into a sustained musical movement. What began in 2006 as a vision shared by a small group of Christian creatives developed into a large-scale gospel brand with numerous seasons, live recordings, international performances, training initiatives and associated creative platforms.

The collective has also provided an important platform for Zimbabwean gospel musicians. By bringing established performers together with emerging singers, Zimpraise has helped create opportunities for collaboration and exposure that individual artists might not have received on their own.
