About Upperroom

UPPERROOM is an American Christian worship collective, church and prayer ministry based in Dallas, Texas. Founded in 2010 by Michael and Lorisa Miller, UPPERROOM began as a small prayer meeting in an office space overlooking downtown Dallas and developed into a larger worship and prayer movement with a growing international audience. Rather than functioning only as a recording group, UPPERROOM operates as a community built around continuous prayer, worship and what its leaders describe as “ministering to the Lord.”

The collective is particularly known for spontaneous worship, extended live recordings and songs such as “Rest on Us,” “Defender,” “Surrounded (Fight My Battles),” “Move Your Heart,” “I Just Love You” and “Land of the Living.” Its music has reached a worldwide audience through streaming platforms, YouTube and collaborations with artists including Maverick City Music, Brandon Lake and other contemporary worship musicians. UPPERROOM’s recordings are largely an extension of what takes place in its prayer room rather than music created separately from its ministry.

Origins and Early History

UPPERROOM began in Dallas in 2010 through a small prayer meeting led by Michael and Lorisa Miller. Michael Miller had been serving in church ministry and was involved with The Branch Church in Dallas before the prayer meeting that eventually became UPPERROOM began. In April 2010, the couple started gathering in an office space in the Oak Lawn area of Dallas.

The location itself played an important role in the story. The space was situated above a veterinary clinic and had originally been an ordinary office environment, but it became the setting for a sustained period of prayer and worship. Miller has described how the early gathering was initially intended to last only from Passover to Pentecost while he and others sought direction for what should come next.

Instead of ending after those initial weeks, the prayer meetings continued and gradually became the center of a new community. The name UPPERROOM reflected both the physical location of the original meeting place and the biblical imagery associated with an upper room as a place of prayer, waiting and encounter with God.

The Prayer Room and Ministry Philosophy

Prayer has remained at the center of UPPERROOM’s identity. From its earliest days, the ministry developed a rhythm of worship and intercession that eventually became known as “Morning, Noon, and Night.” The goal was not simply to hold conventional church services but to create a continuing environment in which prayer and worship could take place throughout the day.

This emphasis is reflected in UPPERROOM’s stated mission. The ministry describes its purpose as giving God thanksgiving and praise, worshiping in agreement with who He is and interceding in agreement with what He desires to do in people’s lives, the city and the world. Its approach places God’s presence and prayer ahead of programs and activities.

Over time, the prayer room developed into a central gathering point for musicians, singers, prayer leaders and members of the wider Dallas-Fort Worth Christian community. According to UPPERROOM, its prayer and worship ministry now operates for more than 70 hours each week, supported by a large volunteer base of musicians, singers and prayer leaders.

Development of the Music Ministry

Music grew naturally out of the prayer room rather than being established as a separate commercial project. UPPERROOM musicians regularly led extended worship sets, with many songs developing spontaneously during these gatherings. Some of those moments were recorded and later released, allowing people outside Dallas to experience the style of worship taking place within the prayer room.

One of the earliest major recordings was Moments, released in 2018. The project captured live worship moments from the prayer room, including “Tremble,” “Adoration,” “Defender,” “All Hail King Jesus” and “Surrounded (Fight My Battles).” The collection helped introduce UPPERROOM to a much wider Christian audience.

“Surrounded (Fight My Battles),” associated particularly with UPPERROOM worship leader Elyssa Smith, became one of the movement’s most recognizable songs. The song’s spontaneous origins and subsequent circulation through online worship videos helped demonstrate how moments from the Dallas prayer room could develop into songs used by churches around the world.

Major Albums and Songs

UPPERROOM followed Moments with a growing catalog of live and spontaneous worship projects. To The One, released in 2019, expanded the collective’s recorded sound with songs developed from the ministry’s prayer-room culture. The album included songs such as “To the One,” “Healer,” “You and You Alone” and “Washed.”

In 2020, UPPERROOM released Land of the Living (Live). The album included “Rest on Us,” “Land of the Living,” “Move Your Heart,” “Oh the Cross,” “Into the Battle,” “King of Kings,” “I Just Love You,” “Unto the Lamb,” “Emmanuel (Champion of the World)” and “History.” Several of these songs have become closely associated with the collective’s worship ministry.

The collective continued releasing projects throughout the 2020s, including Love Note, Move Your Heart, the Moments series and pure. Its more recent catalog also includes 1350 (Live), released in 2025. The continuing flow of releases reflects UPPERROOM’s practice of documenting worship moments rather than relying on a conventional album cycle.

Collaborations and Wider Influence

UPPERROOM’s influence has expanded partly through collaborations with other major contemporary Christian and gospel artists. Its music has intersected with the work of Maverick City Music, Brandon Lake, Eniola Abioye, Naomi Raine and other worship leaders.

“Rest on Us” is particularly significant in this regard. The song appears in recordings by UPPERROOM and has also been associated with Maverick City Music, Brandon Lake and Eniola Abioye, helping carry the song beyond UPPERROOM’s own audience and into the wider contemporary worship movement.

UPPERROOM’s musical influence is also connected to its approach to spontaneous worship. Its recordings frequently preserve extended sections, repetitions and improvised musical passages rather than reducing worship songs to conventional radio formats. This has made its music especially popular among listeners looking for extended devotional and prayer-oriented worship.

Leadership and Global Ministry

Michael and Lorisa Miller remain central figures in UPPERROOM’s story. Michael serves as founder and senior leader, while both he and Lorisa are identified by the ministry as its founding and senior leaders. Their leadership has helped shape UPPERROOM around prayer, worship and the idea of building a community centered on God’s presence.

The ministry has also developed a broader network through TURN, the UPPERROOM Network. TURN grew out of UPPERROOM’s desire to help other churches and ministry leaders establish communities focused on prayer and the presence of God. The network seeks to equip pastors and ministry leaders to develop similar cultures of prayer and worship in their own cities.

UPPERROOM has also established a school of ministry and other training initiatives. These efforts reflect the organization’s broader purpose beyond music, with an emphasis on equipping believers to live lives centered on prayer, worship and service.

Current Work and Legacy

UPPERROOM continues to operate as both a local church and an international worship ministry. Its Dallas ministry includes regular church services and a prayer room, while its music, livestreams and online content reach audiences far beyond Texas. The organization currently has a Downtown Dallas campus and a Lake Highlands Prayer Room, with plans to expand its Dallas facilities.

The ministry’s planned new Dallas campus is intended to increase its capacity for prayer, worship, training and community activities. UPPERROOM describes the project as an effort to create a larger “resting place” for God’s presence while strengthening its ministry and global reach.

UPPERROOM’s lasting contribution to contemporary Christian music is closely connected to its distinctive model of worship. Instead of treating songs as isolated performances, the collective has built its music around a continuing culture of prayer and spontaneous worship. Through recordings such as Moments, To The One and Land of the Living, as well as songs such as “Rest on Us,” “Defender,” “Move Your Heart” and “Surrounded,” UPPERROOM has become an influential voice in modern worship.

Its story is ultimately less about a conventional music group and more about a worship community whose music grew out of an ongoing prayer movement. What began with a small gathering in a Dallas office in 2010 has developed into a church, prayer room, music ministry, training movement and international network, with UPPERROOM continuing to place prayer and worship at the center of its identity.
