About Soweto Gospel Choir

Soweto Gospel Choir is a South African gospel ensemble formed in Soweto in 2002. Built from singers drawn from churches and community choirs, the group combines traditional South African gospel with African spiritual music, contemporary gospel, American spirituals and elements of popular music. Its performances are known for rich vocal harmonies, energetic choreography and the use of several South African languages, including isiZulu, isiXhosa and Sesotho.

Since its formation, Soweto Gospel Choir has developed from a Johannesburg-based ensemble into one of South Africa’s most internationally recognised vocal groups. The choir has performed on major stages around the world, collaborated with artists including U2, Peter Gabriel, Robert Plant and Diana Ross, and earned three Grammy Awards. Its music has also frequently connected gospel with broader themes of African identity, freedom, human dignity and social justice.

Formation and Early Years

Soweto Gospel Choir was established in 2002 through the work of the late choir director David Mulovhedzi and executive producer Beverly Bryer. Mulovhedzi had already been involved with the Holy Jerusalem Choir, while the formation of the new ensemble brought together singers from his church choir, other Soweto churches and the wider community. The group’s creation was driven by an ambition to showcase the depth of South African vocal talent to audiences beyond the country.

The choir emerged at an important period in South Africa’s modern cultural history. Although apartheid had ended years earlier, music continued to play an important role in expressing the country’s diverse identities and experiences. Soweto Gospel Choir drew heavily from that tradition, bringing together Christian worship, indigenous musical practices and the communal energy associated with South African performance.

From the beginning, the ensemble was deliberately multicultural in its musical approach. Its repertoire included African gospel songs, traditional spirituals, folk material and contemporary popular songs. This versatility became one of the group’s defining characteristics.

Musical Style and Identity

Soweto Gospel Choir’s sound is built around the strength of collective singing. Rather than depending on a single lead vocalist, the ensemble creates its impact through layered harmonies, call-and-response passages, rhythmic movement and the contrast between solo voices and the full choir.

The group regularly performs in several South African languages, with isiZulu, isiXhosa and Sesotho among those represented in its repertoire. English is also used, particularly when the choir performs internationally or interprets songs from other musical traditions. Its music therefore functions both as gospel worship and as a presentation of South African cultural heritage.

The choir’s repertoire has never been restricted to conventional church music. African spirituals and traditional songs sit alongside contemporary gospel, American spirituals, reggae, folk music and selected popular songs. This broad approach has allowed the group to work with artists from very different musical backgrounds while maintaining its distinctive vocal identity.

International Breakthrough

Soweto Gospel Choir began attracting international attention soon after its formation. One of its early landmark appearances came at the inaugural 46664 concert in Cape Town, an event connected with Nelson Mandela’s campaign against HIV/AIDS. The performance helped introduce the young ensemble to a much wider international audience.

The choir released its debut album, Voices from Heaven, in 2005. The record performed strongly internationally and reached the top of Billboard’s World Music chart. That success established the ensemble as more than a South African touring choir and helped create a foundation for an extensive international career.

International touring soon became a major part of the group’s work. Soweto Gospel Choir performed throughout Africa, Europe, North America and other parts of the world, introducing audiences to South African gospel while developing a reputation for highly energetic live performances.

Albums and Career Development

After Voices from Heaven, the choir released Blessed in 2006 and African Spirit in 2007. Both albums became important milestones in the group’s development. Blessed won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album at the 49th Grammy Awards, while African Spirit won the same category the following year.

The group continued with albums including Live at the Nelson Mandela Theatre, Grace and the 2013 retrospective Divine Decade, which marked the choir’s first decade of activity. Its recordings reflected the group’s expanding repertoire, combining traditional African material with gospel and international songs.

In 2018, Soweto Gospel Choir released Freedom, a project strongly connected to themes of liberation and social justice. The album earned the choir another Grammy Award, this time for Best World Music Album, bringing its total number of Grammy victories to three.

The choir later explored the relationship between South African history and the American civil rights movement through Hope, released in 2022. The album brought together songs associated with the American struggle for civil rights and South African anti-apartheid songs, linking two different historical experiences through music.

Major Collaborations and Performances

Soweto Gospel Choir’s versatility has made collaboration an important part of its career. The group has worked with internationally recognised musicians including Peter Gabriel, U2, Robert Plant, Diana Ross and Johnny Clegg. These collaborations have placed South African gospel voices within a variety of musical settings while also exposing the choir to audiences who might not ordinarily listen to gospel music.

The choir has also appeared on recordings with artists from contemporary African and international music. Its participation in Christopher Tin’s Baba Yetu project contributed to another Grammy-winning recording, further demonstrating the ensemble’s ability to work outside the traditional gospel format.

Major sporting and cultural events have also featured the choir. Among them was the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, which provided another international platform for the group and its celebration of South African music and culture.

Awards and Recognition

Soweto Gospel Choir is one of the most decorated South African vocal ensembles of its generation. Its first two Grammy-winning albums, Blessed and African Spirit, established the group as a major force in international world and gospel music. Its third Grammy came more than a decade later with Freedom in 2019.

The group has received six Grammy nominations in total through the 2025 Grammy Awards. Its nominations include Grace in 2011, Live at the Nelson Mandela Theatre in 2009 and a 2025 nomination for “Sunlight to My Soul,” a collaboration with Angรฉlique Kidjo.

The 2025 nomination was particularly significant because it showed the choir continuing to receive international recognition more than two decades after its formation. The South African government also publicly recognised the nomination as an achievement reflecting the group’s contribution to South African music and culture.

Legacy and Current Career

The significance of Soweto Gospel Choir extends beyond its awards. The ensemble has become an important international representative of South African gospel and vocal music, bringing the country’s languages, rhythms and spiritual traditions to audiences across the world.

Its work also demonstrates how gospel music can carry cultural and historical meaning. Projects such as Freedom and Hope have connected worship and vocal performance with ideas of liberation, resilience and social change. In doing so, the choir has preserved elements of South African musical heritage while presenting them in a format accessible to international audiences.
