Phil Wickham is an American contemporary Christian singer, songwriter and worship leader from San Diego, California. Born Philip David Wickham on April 5, 1984, he grew up in a musical Christian family and began leading worship while still a teenager. Over the course of more than two decades, he has become one of the most recognizable voices in contemporary Christian worship, known for songs that combine modern worship songwriting with expansive melodies and congregational appeal.

Wickham first gained attention in the early 2000s with independently released music before signing with a record label and building a wider audience through albums such as Cannons, Heaven & Earth and The Ascension. His songs have since become staples in churches around the world. Early Life and Background

Phil Wickham was born and raised in San Diego, California, as the second of three children. His parents, John and Lisa Wickham, were musicians and had both been members of the Christian band Parable. His father later became a worship leader, giving Wickham an early introduction to both music and church ministry.

Music was therefore a natural part of Wickham’s childhood. His parents encouraged him to learn popular worship songs and to develop his own songwriting abilities. By the age of 13, he was already leading worship for his youth group at Maranatha Chapel in San Diego.

His older brother, Evan Wickham, also became a musician and pastor, further contributing to the family’s strong musical and ministry background. Growing up in that environment gave Phil an opportunity to develop his musical abilities while also forming the theological and devotional foundation that would later become central to his songwriting.

Education and Early Music Career

Wickham attended Calvary Christian School in Vista, California. Rather than following a conventional path into the music industry, he began developing his career through church worship and independent music.

In the early 2000s, he began performing and touring while independently producing his own recordings. His debut album, Give You My World, was released in 2003. The project introduced his songwriting to the Christian music audience and established the direction of his early career.

In 2006, Wickham signed with Simple/INO Records and released his self-titled album, Phil Wickham. The following year, he released Cannons, a project inspired in part by the writings of C. S. Lewis. The album helped strengthen his reputation as a distinctive young voice within contemporary Christian music.

Career and Breakthrough

Wickham’s career expanded considerably with the release of Heaven & Earth in 2009. The album blended contemporary worship with elements of pop and rock and helped move his music beyond the church worship setting into the broader Christian music market.

His subsequent releases continued to establish him as both a recording artist and worship songwriter. Response arrived in 2011, followed by The Ascension in 2013. The latter included songs such as “This Is Amazing Grace,” which became one of the most successful recordings of his career.

“This Is Amazing Grace” became particularly important to Wickham’s development as a songwriter. Its energetic arrangement and accessible message helped it become widely used in churches, while the song’s success on Christian radio introduced Wickham to listeners who may not have encountered his earlier worship music.

The momentum was interrupted in 2014 when Wickham developed a serious problem with his vocal cords. He underwent surgery to remove a polyp and was required to remain silent for a period of time while his voice recovered. The experience forced him to confront the possibility that singing, which had been such a central part of his identity, might no longer be possible.

Vocal Injury and Musical Renewal

The vocal injury became one of the most significant turning points in Wickham’s life and career. Being temporarily unable to sing led to a period of uncertainty and reflection. He has subsequently described the experience as something that changed his understanding of identity, faith and his relationship with music.

After recovering, Wickham returned with Children of God in 2016. The album represented a significant new chapter in his career, both musically and spiritually. It included songs such as “Your Love Awakens Me” and “Doxology/Amen” and helped re-establish him as one of contemporary Christian music’s leading worship artists.

The album’s success was followed by a series of increasingly influential releases. Living Hope, released in 2018, became one of his most important albums and featured the title track “Living Hope,” a song that became widely used in churches and worship settings.

Wickham continued this momentum with Hymn of Heaven in 2021 and I Believe in 2023. Both albums further established his reputation for writing songs that could function both as commercially successful recordings and as congregational worship anthems.

Musical Style and Influences

Wickham’s musical style is rooted in contemporary Christian music and modern worship. His songs often combine atmospheric production, strong melodies and large-scale arrangements with lyrics centered on Christian faith and biblical themes.

One of the defining characteristics of his songwriting is its congregational quality. Although his recordings can be highly produced, many of his songs are written in a way that allows them to be sung by large groups of people. This quality has helped songs such as “Living Hope,” “Battle Belongs” and “House of the Lord” move beyond his own recordings and become part of worship repertoires around the world.

His upbringing also continues to influence his work. Having grown up in a worship-leading family and begun leading worship as a teenager, Wickham developed an understanding of music as an expression of faith rather than simply a form of entertainment.

Notable Songs, Albums and Collaborations

Wickham’s catalogue includes numerous songs that have become closely associated with contemporary Christian worship. “This Is Amazing Grace,” “Living Hope,” “Battle Belongs,” “House of the Lord,” “Hymn of Heaven” and “This Is Our God” are among his most recognized recordings.

Living Hope became one of his landmark projects, while Hymn of Heaven continued the pattern of combining original worship songs with a strong congregational focus. The title track earned significant recognition and became one of the most widely known modern worship songs associated with Wickham.

His collaborations have also been an important part of his career. He has worked with artists and songwriters including Chris Tomlin, Brian Johnson, Jenn Johnson, Jason Ingram and others. His collaboration on “Holy Forever” with Chris Tomlin and other songwriters earned a Grammy nomination, while “Hymn of Heaven” also received Grammy recognition.

In 2023, Wickham released I Believe, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. The album included “This Is Our God,” which became another major song in his catalogue.

Awards, Recognition and Current Career

Wickham’s work has received substantial recognition from the Christian music industry. He has been nominated for three Grammy Awards, including nominations for I Believe, “Hymn of Heaven” and “Holy Forever.” He has also received multiple GMA Dove Awards, including recognition connected to Hymn of Heaven and its title song.

In addition to recording music, Wickham has remained active as a touring worship leader. His concerts and worship events have taken him across the United States and internationally, often bringing together large audiences around contemporary worship music.

In 2025, Wickham released Song of the Saints, continuing his focus on songs centered on Christian faith, worship and hope. The album was followed by an expanded deluxe edition in March 2026. His 2026 releases include the Everyday Hallelujah EP, while the song “Everyday Hallelujah” also became part of his broader creative work around the theme of finding worship in ordinary life.

Wickham has also expanded his work into writing. His book Everyday Hallelujah: Unlocking Deep Joy Through Everyday Acts of Worship explores the idea that worship can extend beyond church services and musical performance into everyday life. He has continued performing and touring in 2026, including the Song of the Saints tour.
