About Jesus Culture

Jesus Culture is an American Christian worship movement and music collective that emerged from Bethel Church in Redding, California. Founded in 1999 as a youth ministry by Banning Liebscher, it began with a simple vision of mobilizing a generation of young Christians to pursue revival and a deeper relationship with Jesus. Over time, what started as a youth conference grew into an international movement encompassing worship music, conferences, churches, schools and other ministry resources.

The music of Jesus Culture has become one of the most recognizable sounds in modern contemporary worship. The collective is associated with songs such as “How He Loves,” “Your Love Never Fails,” “Set a Fire,” “Break Every Chain,” “Spirit Break Out,” “Holy Spirit” and “Fierce.” Rather than functioning as a conventional band with a fixed lineup, Jesus Culture operates as a collective of worship leaders, musicians and songwriters whose members have included Kim Walker-Smith, Chris Quilala, Chris McClarney, Bryan and Katie Torwalt, Derek Johnson and others.

Formation and Early History

Jesus Culture began in the summer of 1999, when Banning Liebscher’s youth group at Bethel Church hosted the first Jesus Culture Conference in Redding. Approximately 500 people attended the initial gathering. The event was created around a vision of seeing young Christians develop a passion for Jesus and become catalysts for spiritual revival.

The conferences continued to grow during the following years. As the movement developed, worship became an increasingly important part of its gatherings. By 2005, the worship ministry had become significant enough for the team to record its first album, Everything. That same year, Jesus Culture began taking its conferences outside Redding, first traveling to Atlanta and later expanding internationally.

The movement held its first international event in England in 2005, followed by gatherings in Australia and other countries. Over the following years, Jesus Culture conferences reached audiences across Europe, Africa, South America and other parts of the world. The organization eventually transitioned from a local youth ministry into a broader movement in 2008.

Development as a Worship Movement

As Jesus Culture expanded, its identity increasingly extended beyond youth conferences. The organization describes its work through several areas, including conferences, worship, churches, schools and resources. Its central purpose has remained the desire to equip Christians for what it describes as revival and to encourage people to live out their faith actively.

A major milestone came in 2011, when Jesus Culture held its first arena gathering in Chicago. Around 14,000 people attended the event, demonstrating how far the movement had grown from its beginnings as a local youth ministry.

The movement later became increasingly connected to local church ministry. Jesus Culture Sacramento was launched in 2014, followed by Jesus Culture San Diego in 2021. This development reflected a broader emphasis on building permanent Christian communities rather than relying solely on conferences and traveling events.

Jesus Culture Music

Music has always been central to the identity of Jesus Culture. The collective’s worship recordings helped transform the movement from a conference ministry into an internationally recognized name in contemporary Christian music.

The first album, Everything, was released in 2005, followed by a succession of live worship recordings. Projects such as We Cry Out, Come Away, Awakening: Live from Chicago, Live from New York, Unstoppable Love, Let It Echo and Love Has a Name helped establish the collective’s musical identity. The official Jesus Culture catalogue now contains more than 20 albums and numerous singles and live projects.

Unlike a traditional band with a permanent lineup, Jesus Culture has operated as a musical family in which different worship leaders take prominent roles on different projects. Kim Walker-Smith became one of its most recognizable voices, while Chris Quilala, Chris McClarney, Bryan and Katie Torwalt, Derek Johnson and other musicians have also contributed significantly to the collective’s recordings.

Musical Style and Influences

The Jesus Culture sound is rooted in contemporary worship but incorporates elements of modern Christian rock, pop and gospel. Many of its recordings are made in live worship environments, allowing congregational singing, extended musical passages and spontaneous moments to become part of the finished recordings.

The collective’s songwriting often centers on themes such as surrender, God’s presence, faith, revival, freedom and personal devotion. Songs are generally designed to be accessible to congregations, which has helped many of them move beyond the Jesus Culture community and become widely used in churches internationally.

Among the movement’s most influential songs are “How He Loves,” “Your Love Never Fails,” “Set a Fire,” “Break Every Chain,” “Spirit Break Out,” “Holy Spirit” and “Fierce.” The organization’s own catalogue describes these songs as some of the anthems that have helped shape its contribution to modern worship music.

Notable Albums and Songs

One of the most important releases in the collective’s history is Everything, the 2005 album that marked the beginning of its recorded worship ministry. It was followed by projects that increasingly introduced Jesus Culture’s worship leaders and songwriting style to international Christian audiences.

Awakening: Live from Chicago captured the large-scale worship gatherings that had become central to the movement. Later releases including Let It Echo and Love Has a Name continued the emphasis on live worship and collective songwriting. Let It Echo, recorded at Jesus Culture Church in Sacramento, featured Kim Walker-Smith, Chris Quilala, Bryan and Katie Torwalt and Chris McClarney among others.

In 2015, Jesus Culture released This Is Jesus Culture, a compilation that brought together several of the movement’s best-known songs, including “Your Love Never Fails,” “How He Loves,” “Rooftops” and “Unstoppable Love.” The compilation helped provide an introduction to the collective’s catalogue for listeners who were discovering its music for the first time.

Awards and Recognition

Jesus Culture’s influence has extended into the mainstream Christian music industry. The collective received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for Living With a Fire at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards in 2019. It did not win the award, but the nomination reflected the growing recognition of its music beyond its own ministry network.

Its greater significance, however, can be measured by the widespread adoption of its songs. Many Jesus Culture compositions have become part of the worship repertoire of churches across different denominations and countries. The collective’s influence has also been amplified by the careers of individual worship leaders who emerged from or became associated with the movement.

The songs have continued to circulate through recordings, church services, conferences, streaming platforms and worship resources, giving Jesus Culture an influence that extends beyond its original conference audience.

Current Music and Ministry

Jesus Culture remains active in music and ministry. Its recent catalogue includes Sounds From the House, Vol. I, released in 2024, as well as Worthy of Hallelujah and Worthy of Hallelujah Deluxe in 2025. The organization has also continued releasing new worship music through its emerging generation of artists.

One of the more recent developments is the emergence of Awakening MVMT, a younger generation of worshippers connected with Jesus Culture’s annual youth conference. Releases such as By Your Blood and “I Was Dead, Now I’m Alive” represent an intentional effort to give younger musicians an opportunity to lead and record music within the movement. Jesus Culture describes this generation as worshippers who have grown up within its church and ministry environment.

The movement also continues to organize conferences and church activities. Its current leadership and ministry structure includes Jesus Culture Sacramento, Jesus Culture San Diego, worship resources and international events, keeping the original emphasis on worship, discipleship and revival at the center of its work.

Legacy and Influence

Jesus Culture has played a significant role in the development of contemporary worship during the 21st century. What began as a youth conference in Redding grew into an international movement whose music has influenced worship leaders, churches and Christian listeners across generations.

Its most lasting contribution is arguably its songwriting. Songs such as “How He Loves,” “Your Love Never Fails,” “Set a Fire,” “Break Every Chain” and “Holy Spirit” have become familiar across the global Christian worship landscape. At the same time, the movement has provided a platform for worship leaders who have gone on to establish successful careers of their own.

Jesus Culture’s story is therefore larger than that of a single band or recording act. It is a movement built around worship, ministry and the development of new Christian leaders. More than two decades after its first conference, it continues to combine music, church life, conferences and training with the same central vision that shaped its beginnings: to encourage a generation to pursue Jesus and carry that faith into their communities and the wider world.
