Early Life and Musical Background

Enkay Ogboruche was born Nkiruka Gift Onuabuobi in Kaduna State in northern Nigeria and grew up in a family of seven. Music was part of her upbringing, and one of her earliest recording experiences came through working with her father. During her teenage years, she became a born-again Christian, an experience that would eventually influence the direction of her music and ministry.

Her musical development combined formal learning, songwriting and practical experience in church ministry. Rather than limiting herself to one musical style, she developed a sound that brings together contemporary worship and African rhythms. This versatility has become one of the defining characteristics of her work.

Beginning of Her Recording Career

Enkay’s professional solo career began in 2014 with “Yes You Are the Lord.” The song introduced her as a recording artist and established the worship-centered approach that would continue throughout her catalogue. Her debut album, The Kingdom Anthem, was released in 2015 and included collaborations with established African gospel musicians, including Sammie Okposo.

The project helped establish Enkay within Nigeria’s contemporary gospel scene. Her music was distinguished by its combination of congregational worship, energetic African praise and personal expressions of Christian faith.

The Bridge

Enkay released her second major album, The Bridge, in 2018. The project expanded her musical range and brought together worship, praise and African-influenced gospel sounds.

One of its most prominent songs was “Salute,” featuring American gospel singer Kierra Sheard. The collaboration gave Enkay greater international exposure and became one of the best-known songs in her catalogue. Other songs associated with the album include “Ezem” and “Morning Dew.”

Her work during this period increasingly reflected her interest in using gospel music to connect different cultures. Collaborations with artists outside Nigeria became an important part of her career, helping her reach audiences beyond the Nigerian gospel market.

Declaration

In 2023, Enkay released Declaration, her third studio album. The album was presented during a period when she was marking her first decade as a performing gospel music minister. It brought together worship songs and declarations of faith and featured several prominent Nigerian gospel artists.

Among the notable songs from the project are “Delight,” featuring Judikay, “Chioma,” “Already Done” and “Good God,” featuring VIZA. The album further established her preference for collaborative gospel music while showcasing her development as a songwriter and worship leader.

Singles and Collaborations

Following Declaration, Enkay continued releasing individual songs and collaborations. Her 2024 releases included “Turn Around,” “All I Have Is Jesus” featuring Canton Jones, “I Worship” featuring Frank Edwards, and “Dependable” featuring Kierra Sheard. She also released “Halleluyah” in 2024, continuing her focus on praise and worship.

Her subsequent music has included “Done It” and “Winner Man” in 2025, as well as “Oh My God O.” In March 2026, she released “Overseer (Live),” adding another live worship recording to her catalogue.

Enkay’s collaborations extend across Africa and internationally. She has worked with gospel musicians from countries including Ghana and Kenya, while her collaborations with artists such as Kierra Sheard, Canton Jones and Frank Edwards have helped broaden the international reach of her music.

Worship Ministry and Initiatives

Beyond recording music, Enkay has developed several worship platforms and ministry initiatives. She is the founder and convener of the Pneuma Worship Experience, a worship gathering centered on intimacy with God and congregational worship. She has also been associated with Praise Flame and Alabanza Concert, the latter being a collaborative worship initiative held in Nigeria and South Africa.

She has also contributed to the development of younger gospel musicians. Enkay served as a judge on Spotlight, a talent discovery and mentorship platform for Nigerian gospel artists, and has worked with choirs and music groups in Nigeria and the United States.

Her ministry has also extended into education and mentorship. She hosts the podcast Dear Younger Self, where she discusses subjects including faith, purpose, discipline, relationships and personal development. She has additionally served as a guest facilitator at Liberty University and has coached music groups in different cities.

Education and Personal Life

Enkay has pursued academic studies alongside her music and ministry career. Her educational background includes studies at Abia State University, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and Nexford University. She has also pursued further studies in music and world cultures at Liberty University.

She is married to Dr. Timothy Ogboruche, and they have three sons.

Recognition and Continuing Career

Enkay’s work has received recognition through several gospel music awards and nominations in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, South Africa and the United States. Her career has increasingly extended beyond Nigeria through international performances, collaborations and worship events.

In 2026, Enkay joined the Recording Academy’s New Member Class. The membership made her one of the Nigerian gospel music professionals participating in the organisation behind the Grammy Awards.
