David Wallace Crowder, professionally known simply as Crowder, is an American Christian singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and worship leader known for blending contemporary Christian music with rock, folk, bluegrass, country, electronic music and other styles. Born on November 29, 1971, in Texarkana, Texas, he first became widely known as the frontman of the David Crowder Band before establishing a successful solo career under the name Crowder.
Crowder’s musical career grew out of his experience as a student at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. While at Baylor, he became involved in creating a church community for students who were disconnected from traditional church settings. The worship band that developed around that ministry eventually became the David Crowder Band, one of the most distinctive groups in contemporary Christian music during the 2000s.
After the David Crowder Band ended in 2012, Crowder continued as a solo artist and developed an even more adventurous musical identity. His solo work has produced major Christian music hits including “Come as You Are,” “All My Hope,” “Red Letters” and “Good God Almighty.” His ability to combine worship songwriting with unconventional arrangements has made him one of the more recognizable and stylistically diverse artists in contemporary Christian music.

David Crowder was born in Texarkana, Texas, and later attended Texarkana College before enrolling at Baylor University in Waco. He graduated from Baylor in 2002 with a degree in English.
His time at Baylor played a decisive role in his future. Crowder and fellow student Chris Seay became concerned that many students were not attending church or finding a Christian community that connected with their experiences. In 1996, they helped establish University Baptist Church, a predominantly college-aged congregation.
Crowder became the church’s worship leader. The music created for its services gradually developed beyond the local congregation, eventually forming the basis of what became the David Crowder Band.
The David Crowder Band emerged from the Baylor worship community during the late 1990s. Crowder served as the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist, working with a rotating group of musicians that included Jack Parker, Mike Dodson, Mike Hogan and Jeremy Bush.
The band’s first major recording was Can You Hear Us?, released in 2002. It was followed by Illuminate in 2003, which helped establish the group nationally within contemporary Christian music.
Rather than following the straightforward pop-rock sound common among many Christian artists at the time, the band experimented with a wide range of musical influences. Their recordings incorporated rock, folk, bluegrass, electronic textures and unconventional instrumentation while retaining a strong worship foundation.
Albums such as A Collision, Remedy and Church Music demonstrated the band’s willingness to experiment. Remedy, released in 2007, became one of the group’s most recognized projects, while Church Music continued the band’s exploration of electronic and alternative sounds within Christian music.
The band’s final studio album, Give Us Rest; Or, A Requiem Mass in C (The Happiest of All Keys), was released in 2012. Later that year, the David Crowder Band ended after roughly 15 years together.
Following the band’s conclusion, Crowder began recording under the shorter name Crowder. His first solo album, Neon Steeple, arrived in 2014.
Neon Steeple introduced a more pronounced mixture of bluegrass, folk, country, electronic production and contemporary Christian music. The album reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Christian Albums chart and No. 8 on the Billboard 200. Its song “Come as You Are” became one of Crowder’s most recognizable solo recordings and earned a Grammy nomination.
Crowder followed the album with American Prodigal in 2016. The project again reached the top of the Christian Albums chart and included songs that continued his combination of roots-oriented music with modern production.
His 2018 album I Know a Ghost pushed the experimentation further, incorporating electronic, bluegrass and hip-hop influences. The album included collaborations with artists such as Tauren Wells and Mandisa.
One of the defining features of Crowder’s career is his refusal to remain within a single musical style. His recordings have moved between contemporary worship, alternative rock, folk, bluegrass, country, gospel and electronic music.
This diversity is closely connected to his approach to Christian songwriting. Crowder has often treated familiar Christian themes through arrangements that borrow from musical traditions outside mainstream worship music. Acoustic instruments, banjo, guitars, electronic programming and layered production have all played roles in his recordings.
His music can therefore sound very different from one album to another while retaining recurring themes of faith, grace, redemption, doubt and the relationship between God and humanity.
His connection to the Passion movement has also been significant. Through Passion gatherings and related worship projects, he has worked alongside artists including Chris Tomlin, Matt Maher, Kari Jobe and other prominent contemporary Christian musicians.
Crowder’s work with the David Crowder Band produced several influential Christian albums, including Illuminate (2003), A Collision (2005), Remedy (2007), Church Music (2009) and Give Us Rest (2012).
His solo discography began with Neon Steeple in 2014 and continued with American Prodigal in 2016, I Know a Ghost in 2018, Milk & Honey in 2021 and The Exile in 2024.
Among his best-known songs are “Come as You Are,” “Lift Your Head Weary Sinner,” “All My Hope,” “Red Letters,” “Run Devil Run,” “Good God Almighty” and “In the House.”
“Good God Almighty,” released on Milk & Honey, became a particularly important milestone in his solo career. It gave Crowder his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs chart.
The Exile, released in 2024, became another major chart success and reached No. 1 on the Christian Albums chart. The project continued his interest in combining roots music with contemporary Christian production.
Throughout his career, Crowder has collaborated with numerous Christian artists and musicians. His collaborations have included artists such as Tauren Wells, Mandisa, Maverick City Music, Chris Tomlin and Passion.
He has also received significant recognition within the Christian music industry. During the David Crowder Band era, the group won multiple GMA Dove Awards and received a Grammy nomination for Best Rock or Rap Gospel Album.
As a solo artist, Crowder received a Grammy nomination for “Come as You Are” and has earned multiple GMA Dove Award nominations. His music has also received recognition through K-LOVE Fan Awards and Christian radio.
His success has extended beyond awards. Several of his albums have reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Christian Albums chart, and his songs have become part of contemporary Christian radio and worship culture.
Crowder has continued recording and performing following the release of The Exile. He has remained active through collaborations, live performances and new recordings, including work released in 2025 and 2026.
His recent work has included the song “The Rock,” a collaboration with Forrest Frank, as well as appearances and collaborations connected to Passion and other Christian music projects. His continued output reflects the same stylistic openness that has characterized his career since the David Crowder Band years.
Crowder’s lasting contribution to contemporary Christian music comes partly from the way he expanded the musical vocabulary available to Christian artists. He demonstrated that worship and Christian songwriting could incorporate bluegrass, folk, rock, electronic music, country and other genres without abandoning their central themes.
