About Christafari

Christafari is an American Christian reggae band founded in 1989 by Pastor Mark Mohr. The group is widely recognised as one of the pioneering acts in gospel reggae, combining the rhythms, instrumentation and cultural influence of reggae with Christian worship and evangelism. Based in the United States, Christafari has developed a distinctive identity around what its members call being “musicianaries”, musical missionaries who use their performances, recordings and humanitarian work to share the Christian message around the world.

The story of Christafari began with Mohr, who was introduced to reggae as a teenager and later experienced a dramatic conversion to Christianity at the age of 17. Soon afterward, he wrote and performed his first gospel reggae song, and the name Christafari was born from a friend’s description of his new identity. Over more than three decades, the group has grown from a pioneering American gospel reggae project into an international ministry that has performed in more than 90 nations, released more than 35 albums and reached audiences through concerts, television, music videos and missionary outreach.

Origins and Early Life of Mark Mohr

Christafari’s story is closely tied to the life of its founder, Mark Mohr. Raised in a Christian home, Mohr became interested in reggae during his teenage years. A visit to Jamaica exposed him to the culture and music of the island, and he became increasingly immersed in reggae and Rastafarian beliefs. His teenage years were also marked by drug use and rebellion.

At 17, Mohr experienced a major spiritual turning point. He gave up his previous lifestyle and committed his life to Jesus Christ. Within weeks of his conversion, he wrote and performed a gospel reggae song at a Christian youth camp. A bass player who heard the performance remarked that Mohr was no longer a Rastafarian but a “Christafarian”, a name that eventually became Christafari.

The new name reflected the direction Mohr wanted his music to take. Instead of abandoning reggae after his conversion, he sought to use the genre as a vehicle for Christian music. Christafari therefore emerged from the idea that the musical language of reggae could be used to communicate the Christian message to audiences around the world.

Formation and Early Music Career

Christafari was formally established in 1989, making it one of the earliest American groups to focus specifically on gospel reggae. Mohr continued developing his musical and ministry skills while studying at Biola University, where he later received his ordination.

The group began building its catalogue during the 1990s. Among its early projects was Reggae Worship Vol. 1, which helped establish the band’s approach to combining reggae rhythms with Christian worship. Christafari’s music drew from roots reggae, dancehall, dub and other Jamaican styles while replacing the traditional themes of reggae with explicitly Christian songwriting.

The band gained further attention through its association with Gotee Records during the 1990s. Mohr recorded two albums with the label under the mentorship of TobyMac before eventually establishing his own record company, Lion of Zion Entertainment, in 1999. The move allowed Christafari to develop its music and international ministry independently.

Musical Style and Influences

Christafari’s defining sound is gospel reggae. The band uses familiar reggae characteristics such as offbeat guitar rhythms, prominent bass lines, Jamaican-inspired percussion and dub production, while placing Christian worship, biblical themes and evangelism at the centre of its lyrics.

The group’s music has never been limited to a single form of reggae. Its catalogue includes roots reggae, worship reggae, dancehall and dub, allowing the band to reinterpret both traditional hymns and contemporary Christian songs through Jamaican musical forms. This versatility has helped Christafari appeal to both Christian listeners and reggae audiences.

The band’s name and musical identity sometimes lead listeners to associate it with Rastafarianism, but Christafari explicitly identifies itself as a Christian group and states that it is not a Rastafarian organisation. Its music and ministry are instead centred on Jesus Christ and the Christian gospel.

Family, Ministry and Global Outreach

Christafari gradually developed from a band into a family-led ministry. Mark Mohr married Trinidadian singer and bassist Avion Blackman in 2003 after meeting her during a Caribbean mission trip. Blackman became a full-time member of Christafari, contributing vocals and bass while bringing her own Caribbean musical background to the group.

Their daughter, Ziza Forever Mohr, also became part of the band’s performing family. According to Christafari’s official biography, she first performed with the group in the Solomon Islands when she was six years old and has continued appearing with the band.

The band’s ministry extends beyond concerts. Christafari describes its members as “musicianaries” and has made missionary outreach a central part of its work. During international tours, the group has participated in activities including visiting orphanages, feeding people in need, clothing disadvantaged communities and conducting evangelistic events.

Over the course of its history, Christafari has performed in more than 90 nations and all 50 U.S. states. The group has also appeared at two Olympic Games and at a U.S. presidential inaugural celebration. Its extensive touring has become one of the most important aspects of its identity, allowing the band to combine musical performance with missionary work.

Notable Albums and Career Achievements

Christafari has maintained an unusually large catalogue throughout its career. Its discography includes projects such as Soulfire, Word Sound and Power, Valley of Decision, Reggae Worship: The First Fruits of Christafari, Gravity, To the Foundation, Reggae Worship: A Roots Revival, Anthems, The Day of the Lord and The Prophet.

One of the band’s most significant chart achievements came in 2012, when Reggae Worship: A Roots Revival became the first gospel album to reach number one on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart. Christafari’s official biography states that the group’s following five studio albums also reached number one on the reggae chart.

The band has also received recognition from Christian and reggae music organisations. Christafari was nominated for a Dove Award in 1996, while later honours and nominations included recognition from the Marlin Awards, Urban Gospel Industry Awards and other organisations. In 2007, To the Foundation appeared on the Grammy Awards ballot for Best Reggae Album.

Recent Music and Current Career

Christafari has remained highly active in the 2020s, continuing to release both original music and reggae interpretations of contemporary Christian songs. Projects from this period include The Day of the Lord in 2022, The Prophet in 2024 and Sounds of Salvation in 2025.

The Prophet, released in June 2024, included songs such as “Top Ranking”, “Babylon Will Fall”, “The Great Light”, “Jerusalem”, “The Prophet” and “Waterfall”. The project continued the band’s practice of combining biblical themes with reggae production and original songwriting.

In 2025, Christafari released Sounds of Salvation, a 15-track project featuring songs including “Open the Door”, “Sounds of Salvation”, “Gospel Truth”, “Jesus, Yeshua (Salvation Is Your Name)”, “Come to the Altar”, “I Trust in God”, “He’s My Rock” and “Praise”.

The band’s catalogue has continued to expand in 2026. Releases listed by Christafari include Ruja o Leรฃo, Departure Lounge: Lo-Fi Sound Remixes and Voice In The Wilderness Vol. 1. The group has also continued producing music videos and international outreach content, including the 2026 video for “Jesus, Yeshua”, a reggae worship song from Sounds of Salvation.

Legacy and Influence

Christafari’s most significant contribution to Christian music has been its role in establishing gospel reggae as a recognised musical expression. By combining the rhythms and musical vocabulary of reggae with explicitly Christian worship and evangelism, the band helped demonstrate that gospel music could be presented through musical traditions outside conventional church styles.

Its influence also comes from the scale of its international ministry. Rather than treating touring simply as a way to promote recordings, Christafari has used its performances as opportunities for evangelism and humanitarian outreach. The band’s stated mission is to reach people and nations with the Christian gospel through music, personal ministry and service.
