Benachi, whose real name is Benson Ongachi, is a Kenyan gospel singer, songwriter and music minister known for his soulful vocals and faith-centered songs. He first gained wide attention in the Kenyan gospel scene through โMwanake,โ a memorable collaboration with the late gospel singer Peter Kaberere, who also served as an important mentor in his early career.
Raised in Kenya, Benachi developed his musical abilities while still in school. His early interest was particularly strong in percussion, and he eventually began writing and performing gospel music. His journey from a young musician in Western Kenya to an established gospel artist was shaped by persistence, limited resources and his determination to build a career through music.

Benachi grew up in Kenya and spent part of his childhood in Makongeni before his family relocated to Butere in western Kenya. He attended St. Johnโs Primary School and later Butere High School. During his school years, music became an important part of his life, particularly through percussion and school performances.
His passion eventually led him to form a gospel trio with fellow students Eliud and Anto. The group, known as Gospel Brothers, recorded an album and gained some recognition in western Kenya. However, limited finances made it difficult to promote their music more widely, particularly in Nairobi. The group eventually separated, after which Benachi continued pursuing music as a solo artist.
After moving to Nairobi to pursue greater opportunities, Benachi began recording his own material. Among his early songs were โHutoniachaโ and โDawa,โ releases that helped establish him as an emerging voice in Kenyan gospel.
A particularly important relationship in his career was his friendship and mentorship with Peter Kaberere. Their musical connection eventually produced โMwanake,โ a song that became Benachi’s breakthrough and introduced his music to a much wider Kenyan audience.
โMwanake,โ recorded with Kaberere, became the defining song of Benachi’s early career. The song’s message centers on human dignity, faith and equality before God, themes that resonated strongly with gospel audiences.
The success of โMwanakeโ also brought Benachi recognition at the Groove Awards, where the song was nominated for Song of the Year in 2015. Around the same period, he continued releasing music including โNitembelee,โ โNifinyange,โ โKidonda,โ โNi Heriโ and โRudi Nyumbani.โ
Kaberere’s death in 2014 had a profound effect on Benachi. He later described the loss of his mentor as one of the lowest points of his life, explaining that the experience affected him deeply before eventually becoming a turning point in his own ministry and career.
Benachi’s music is rooted in contemporary Kenyan gospel, with a strong emphasis on testimony, faith, encouragement and dependence on God. His songs frequently combine modern gospel arrangements with African rhythms and Swahili lyrics, while his vocal delivery tends to be warm and expressive.
Over the years, he has collaborated with several Kenyan gospel artists. His catalogue includes โUmenitoshaโ with Evelyn Wanjiru, โSio Mwishoโ with Kambua, โEbenezerโ with Moji Shortbabaa and Guardian Angel, โTembea Namiโ with Alice Kimanzi, and โAjeโ with Moji Shortbabaa.
Benachi’s recorded catalogue includes the albums Tulia, released in 2016, Tiba Yangu, released in 2021, and Not Alone, released in 2023. โMwanakeโ remains one of his most recognized recordings, while other notable songs include โTulia,โ โHeri Nikuimbie,โ โShahidi,โ โKidonda,โ โNikujue Zaidi,โ โSio Mwishoโ and โNitembee.โ
His later work has continued to explore themes of faith and personal testimony. In 2023, he released โNashukuru,โ a thanksgiving song that reflects his continued focus on gratitude and God’s faithfulness. His more recent releases include โRehema,โ โKwa Wema,โ โUsinipite,โ โParari,โ โHapanaโ and โYesu Ni Jenge,โ showing that he has remained active in recording new gospel music.
Benachi received his first major award recognition when he won Best Songwriter at the 2014 Talanta Awards in Kenya. The award helped increase his profile and led to an invitation to perform in the United States. His growing reputation was also reflected in the Groove Awards nomination for โMwanakeโ and later recognition for his gospel music videos.
In 2020, his collaboration with Kambua, โSio Mwisho,โ received a nomination for Best Gospel Video of the Year at the Pulse Music Video Awards.
Benachi’s connection with the United States began through performance opportunities following the success of his music in Kenya. He eventually moved to the United States, where he continued his music ministry while building a family life there. He has spoken about how his early American tours influenced his decision to make the country his home.
