Jonathan McReynolds – Own Advice

Download Own Advice Mp3 Audio by Jonathan McReynolds

Jonathan McReynolds is a two time Grammy Award winning American gospel artist, songwriter, author, and Distinguished Professor at Virginia Union University whose music is known for bringing faith, honesty, and everyday human experience into the same conversation. His songwriting often explores the tension between spiritual truth and real life, with a willingness to address the questions, struggles, and contradictions that believers experience.

His song ‘Own Advice” is a deeply honest reflection on the gap between knowing what is right and actually living it. The song turns the mirror inward, confronting the tendency to give wisdom to others while sometimes struggling to apply that same wisdom to ourselves. For the believer, it speaks to the humility of admitting that we can point people toward heaven while still needing God to work on the places in our own hearts.

Own Advice Lyrics by Jonathan McReynolds

This song goes out to the hypocrite in all of us.

It’s easy to pick out what’s wrong from right
I see it as clearly, as dark from light
Wisdom for somebody else’s life
If only I took my own advice

I say watch your words, cause they make a sound
Fly high, but keep your feet on the ground
And don’t let the day keep you up at night
If only I took my own advice

Somehow
I can be in hell but point to heaven
Somehow
I can help the world but not myself

You may be full but before you pour
Sweep all the dirt from your own front door
The truth is more useful than views and likes
So maybe just take your own advice

Somehow
I can be in hell but point to heaven
Somehow
I can help the world but not myself

Tell me who can save a savior
Oo, yeah

Hold onto purpose, but not your plans
Make sure your words line up with your hands
Don’t be a fool, thinking that you’re wise
And maybe just take your own advice
If only we’d take our own advice
Jonny just take your own advice
