About Stromae

Stromae is a Belgian singer, rapper, songwriter and record producer who has captivated global audiences with his innovative blend of electronic music, hip hop and French pop. Born Paul Van Haver, he is widely recognized for pairing infectious, upbeat dance melodies with deeply poignant and socially conscious lyrics.

Emerging from the European club scene, Stromae became an international phenomenon in the early 2010s. His stage name is a Verlan anagram of the word “Maestro,” reflecting his masterful approach to production and songwriting. Rather than relying on standard pop tropes, he uses his music to explore complex themes such as absent fathers, mental health, relationship struggles and societal issues.

His unique artistic vision extends beyond music into striking visual storytelling and fashion. By creating a bridge between classical European chanson traditions and modern electronic beats, Stromae has firmly established himself as one of the most distinctive and influential Francophone artists of his generation.

Early Life and Background

Paul Van Haver was born in Brussels to a Rwandan father, Pierre Rutare, and a Belgian mother, Miranda Van Haver. He and his siblings were raised primarily by his mother in a French speaking environment on the outskirts of Brussels. His father, an architect who spent most of his time in Rwanda, was largely absent from his life. Tragically, his father was killed during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, a loss that profoundly affected young Paul and would heavily influence his future songwriting.

How His Music Career Started

Stromae’s musical journey began at a young age when he enrolled in a local music academy to study music history and learn to play the drums. By the year 2000, he started performing as a rapper under the alias Opsmaestro, which he later flipped to Stromae. He formed a short lived rap duo called Suspicion with a friend, producing a few early tracks before deciding to pursue a solo career. To fund his private education at a film and music school in Brussels, he worked part time in the hospitality industry, absorbing experiences that would shape his grounded perspective on everyday life.

Career and Breakthrough

While attending film school, Stromae released his debut EP and caught the attention of the music industry. His monumental breakthrough arrived in 2009 with the release of the single “Alors on danse.” The track exploded across Europe, topping the charts in over a dozen countries and making him a household name. This massive success paved the way for his 2010 debut studio album, “Cheese.” However, it was his sophomore album, “Racine carrรฉe” (Square Root), released in 2013, that cemented his status as a global superstar. The album shattered sales records in France and Belgium, largely driven by the emotionally charged hit single “Papaoutai.”

Musical Style and Influences

Stromae’s sound is a vibrant collision of different worlds. He seamlessly blends pulsing house and electronic dance beats with the storytelling traditions of French chanson, earning him frequent comparisons to the legendary Jacques Brel. His music also heavily incorporates African rhythms, particularly Congolese rumba, reflecting his heritage. What sets his style apart is the stark contrast between his music and his lyrics. He frequently writes upbeat, highly danceable tracks that explore dark, serious subjects like terminal illness, domestic struggles, alienation and grief.

Notable Songs and Albums

The 2013 album “Racine carrรฉe” remains a landmark project in modern Francophone music. Its lead single, “Papaoutai,” addresses the pain of growing up without a father, while “Formidable” captures the despair of a messy public breakup. Following a long hiatus, Stromae released his highly anticipated third studio album, “Multitude,” in 2022. The project featured deeply vulnerable tracks like “L’enfer,” which tackled his personal struggles with mental health and suicidal thoughts.

Major Collaborations

Despite primarily singing in French, Stromae has drawn the attention of massive international artists. Following his initial breakout, Kanye West remixed his hit “Alors on danse” in 2010. In 2014, he contributed to “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” soundtrack on the song “Meltdown,” collaborating with Lorde, Pusha T, Q-Tip and Haim.He provided vocals for Coldplay on their 2019 single “Arabesque” and worked closely with French rapper Orelsan on the hit track “La pluie”.In 2022, he teamed up with Camila Cabello for an updated version of his song “Mon amour”.

Personal Life

Stromae is married to Coralie Barbier, a talented fashion designer who has been instrumental in crafting his signature aesthetic. Together, they run Mosaert, an independent creative label that handles his music production, music videos and a highly successful vintage inspired clothing line. The couple welcomed a son in 2018. Over the years, Stromae has been very open about his health battles. In 2015, he suffered severe adverse reactions to an anti malaria medication prescribed during an African tour, triggering intense panic attacks and profound anxiety that forced him to step away from the public eye for several years.

Following his triumphant return with the “Multitude” album in 2022, Stromae embarked on a global tour. Unfortunately, he had to cancel the remaining 2023 dates of his tour to prioritize his health and well being. Despite stepping back from exhausting tour schedules, he has remained active in the studio and through his creative label Mosaert. In late 2024, he notably contributed to the soundtrack of the hit animated series “Arcane” for its second season, recording the track “Ma meilleure ennemie” alongside the acclaimed French singer Pomme. In 2025, he released a remix of the classic track “Anderlecht Champion,” further showcasing his continued passion for blending diverse musical worlds.
