Prosper Nkomezi was born in 1995 into a devout Pentecostal household in Rwanda. From a very young age, music was a constant presence in his life. As a child, he was so fascinated by gospel music that he would creatively place his radio inside a broken, water-filled jerrycan just to amplify the sound and hear the songs more clearly. He naturally gravitated toward instruments and learned to play the piano as a young boy.His foundational spiritual and musical training began in Sunday School, and he eventually joined the ADEPR church choir before later transitioning to the Zion Temple Celebration Center.
Despite his love for playing the keyboard, Nkomezi never actually imagined he would become a lead singer. His journey into vocal performance started unexpectedly when his uncle noticed his singing voice and encouraged him to pursue it.In 2014, at the age of eighteen, he began taking his musical gifts more seriously.By 2015, he was actively composing songs for his local choir.
The true turning point occurred during a studio recording session with the Injili Bora Choir. The choir’s leader, Prosper Munyakuri, singled Nkomezi out from the entire group and insisted that he was the right person to sing the lead vocals. This moment of mentorship gave him the confidence to step out to the front of the stage. In 2016, he officially launched his music career at the Rwamagana branch of Zion Temple, setting the stage for his eventual solo debut.
Nkomezi officially introduced himself as a solo recording artist in 2017 with the release of his debut single “Sinzahwema,” which is also widely known as “Amamara”. The track resonated deeply with the Rwandan Christian community, launching him into the national spotlight. Rather than chasing commercial trends, he focused heavily on live worship experiences, organizing major concerts that quickly gained a reputation for their high spiritual energy. Over the years, his ministry has expanded significantly, allowing him to headline massive events, such as his notable concert at Camp Kigali in May 2024.
Nkomezi’s sound is deeply rooted in contemporary praise and worship, characterized by slow, atmospheric piano builds and passionate vocal declarations. He is highly intentional about his songwriting process, noting that he rarely forces a song.Instead, he waits for inspiration from the Holy Spirit, often receiving lyrics and melodies spontaneously during private prayers or live worship gatherings.
He cites South African gospel legend Benjamin Dube as one of his earliest and most profound inspirations, recalling how he would spend nights listening to Dube’s music. He is also heavily influenced by established Rwandan gospel ministers like Aimรฉ Uwimana, Gentil Misigaro, and his former choir director Prosper Munyakuri.
Since his debut, Nkomezi has built an impressive catalog of beloved worship anthems. Following the success of his first single, he released his debut project, Sinzahwema, Vol. 1, in 2018. He has consistently released impactful singles and live EPs over the years, including popular tracks like “Urarinzwe,” “Wanyujuje Indirimbo,” “Ibasha,” and “Nshoboza”. His live recording sessions are particularly popular, capturing the raw, unedited atmosphere of his worship leading.
