Jason Nelson was born on November 10, 1974, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Bishop James D. Nelson Sr. and Sister Bessie Nelson. He was born just moments after his twin brother, Jonathan. Raised in a devout Christian home as a preacher’s kid, his life was deeply rooted in the church. His father served as the pastor of the Greater Bethlehem Temple Church, where Jason spent much of his childhood.Surrounded by a musically inclined family, he developed an early interest in instruments and singing. At the age of twelve, he began playing the bass guitar for his father’s church after his brother Jonathan took up the organ and his older brother James played the drums. He later received classical vocal training at the Baltimore School for the Arts and continued to hone his craft while attending Morgan State University.
Nelson began his professional journey as an instrumentalist and background vocalist.Armed with his vocal skills and talent on the bass, he made a name for himself playing in bands for established gospel artists like Yolanda Adams, BeBe Winans, and Karen Clark Sheard.Around 2003, he had a significant career shift when he and his brother Jonathan put together a group to sing backing vocals for hit songwriter and producer Donald Lawrence.Impressed by Jason’s vocal ability, Lawrence invited him to join his group, Company, and featured him on projects like “I Speak Life.”These experiences ignited Nelson’s desire to record his own live music. In 2005, he released his debut independent album, “I Shall Live,” through Jaelyn Son Records, marking his official transition to a solo artist.
Following his debut, Nelson released a second independent project, “Place of Worship,” in 2008. However, his major label breakthrough arrived a few years later. While singing at a service in 2010, his performance caught the attention of an executive from Verity Records, who promptly signed him to a deal.Under Verity, he released the highly successful album “Shifting the Atmosphere” in May 2012. The project was a massive critical and commercial success, debuting on both the Billboard 200 and the Top Gospel Albums chart. This breakthrough established him as a premier solo artist in contemporary gospel music, bringing his soul stirring worship anthems to a national audience.
Nelson’s musical style bridges the gap between traditional black gospel and smooth, urban contemporary R&B. He is celebrated for his rich, warm tenor voice and his ability to create intimate, engaging atmospheres during live recordings.Growing up, he was heavily influenced by gospel greats such as Fred Hammond, Marvin Winans, and Dawkins and Dawkins, as well as the soulful sounds of Donnie Hathaway. His classical training also shines through in his precise vocal control and sophisticated musical arrangements.
Building on the success of his major label debut, Nelson released his follow up album, “Jesus Revealed,” in January 2015 via RCA Inspiration. The live recording was another major triumph, reaching the number one spot on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart and charting on the Billboard 200. He continued his streak of successful releases with “The Answer” in 2018 and “Close” in 2021. Throughout his discography, he has delivered powerful worship anthems such as “Shifting the Atmosphere,” “I Am,” “Forever,” and “Breathe,” which have become staples in modern church services.
Outside of his recording career, Nelson is a dedicated family man and spiritual leader. He married his wife, Tonya, in May 1997, and together they have two children, a daughter named Jaelyn Paris and a son named Jason Christopher.Continuing his family’s legacy of ministry, Nelson serves as the lead pastor of his father’s church, The Tabernacle at Greater Bethlehem Temple in Baltimore, having been elevated to the position in July 2007.
