Jabu Hlongwane was born on June 10, 1961, in Zola, a vibrant township in Soweto, South Africa. The fifth of seven children, he grew up in the nearby area of Dlamini. His early introduction to music occurred during his high school years, where he eagerly joined the school choir and began forming small vocal groups. He later taught himself to play a few chords on the guitar, forming a musical trio with his younger brother and sister. These formative experiences sparked a lifelong love for music, though it would take several years before he pursued it as a full-time profession.
After matriculating from Amangwe High School in KwaZulu-Natal, Hlongwane did not immediately enter the music industry.Instead, he spent five years working as a laboratory assistant at an aluminum factory in Richards Bay.Seeking to further his education, he later enrolled at the University of Zululand, where he earned a degree in Education, majoring in English, Communication Science, and Education. His university years were crucial for his musical development, as he joined campus jazz ensembles and experimented with soul and African music alongside fellow students.
While at the University of Zululand, Hlongwane established a gospel music group called The Emmanuels, teaming up with his close friend and talented pianist, Mthunzi Namba.Together, the two musicians frequently performed at campus venues. After graduating, Hlongwane began working as an English teacher at a high school and later lectured at a college for almost a decade.During these years as an educator, he slowly laid the groundwork for his music career, singing at events and actively participating in the South African gospel circuit. In 1994, he officially released his first solo studio album, marking the start of his professional music journey.
Hlongwane’s massive breakthrough arrived when he co-founded the contemporary gospel group Family Factory, which helped elevate the genre’s standing in South Africa. However, his most significant cultural contribution occurred in the mid-1990s when he teamed up with Lindelani Mkhize and Mthunzi Namba to create Joyous Celebration.Originally conceived as a project to celebrate South Africa’s peaceful transition to democracy and to discover local talent, Joyous Celebration quickly morphed into an unstoppable musical phenomenon. As a co-founder, lead singer, and producer, Hlongwane helped guide the ensemble to unprecedented success, releasing dozens of live albums and filling arenas across Africa and the world.
While Joyous Celebration occupies a massive part of his legacy, Hlongwane has maintained a highly successful solo career.Since his debut, he has released numerous solo projects including “Umbusozayo”, “Khayalami”, and “Vuma Moya Wam”.In 2009, he shifted his focus from traditional studio recordings to live worship by launching the “Crosspower Experience” series. This successful series of live albums blends traditional gospel with modern arrangements, featuring energetic, contemporary praise and worship. As a songwriter, his compositions have been performed by countless choirs and artists throughout the continent.
His immense contributions to African gospel music have been widely celebrated by the industry.Hlongwane has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including honors from the South African Music Awards and a special award for Best Contribution in Gospel Music at the Africa Gospel Music Awards. His influence has also been recognized internationally.During a tour in the United States, the mayor of Maryland presented him with the Key to the City, naming him an honorary citizen in recognition of his inspiring cultural work.
Hlongwane is a dedicated family man who balances his highly public life with his personal commitments. He is married to his wife, Sibongile, and together they have four children, consisting of three daughters and one son.Deeply passionate about faith, he serves as the senior pastor at Crosspower Ministries, a vibrant church based in Johannesburg.
