Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Cody Johnson was born on May 21, 1987, in Sebastopol, Texas, a small East Texas community. He grew up in a musical family and learned to play guitar at the age of 12. During his teenage years, Johnson developed an interest in rodeo and eventually competed as a bull rider. The combination of music, rural life and rodeo would later become central to the identity he developed as an artist.

Before pursuing music full-time, Johnson worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as a prison supervisor in Huntsville. His early adult years were therefore very different from the life of a major touring country artist. At the same time, he continued developing his songwriting and performing skills and eventually decided to make music his primary career.

In 2006, Johnson formed the Cody Johnson Band and released his debut album, Black and White Label, independently through his own CoJo label. He followed it with the live album Live and Rocking in 2007. These early records helped establish the independent, grassroots approach that would remain an important part of his career.

Independent Career

Johnson spent much of the 2010s building his reputation outside the traditional Nashville system. He released a series of albums independently and developed a loyal audience through extensive touring, particularly across Texas and the American South.

His 2011 album A Different Day was followed by Cowboy Like Me in 2014. He gained a much larger audience with Gotta Be Me, released in 2016. The album became a major independent success and reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Country Albums chart. Its performance demonstrated that Johnson had built a substantial audience without initially relying on a major record label.

His independent success continued with Ain’t Nothin’ to It, which ultimately became his first album to reach No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. By this stage, Johnson had established himself as an artist whose career had been built largely through direct relationships with listeners, extensive touring and word-of-mouth support.

Major-Label Breakthrough

Johnson signed with Warner Records Nashville in 2019, beginning a new stage of his career. His first major-label album, Ain’t Nothin’ to It, preserved the traditional country character of his earlier work while giving him access to a much larger recording and promotional platform.

The album produced several successful singles, including “On My Way to You,” which became one of his signature early major-label songs. Johnson’s combination of traditional country instrumentation, strong vocals and personal storytelling helped distinguish him at a time when country music was increasingly incorporating pop, hip-hop and other contemporary influences.

He followed the album with Human: The Double Album in 2021. The ambitious 18-track project explored themes of family, relationships, faith, work and everyday life. Its songs demonstrated the range of Johnson’s songwriting while maintaining the traditional country foundation that had defined his career.

“‘Til You Can’t” and Mainstream Success

Johnson’s biggest breakthrough came with “‘Til You Can’t,” a song written by Ben Stennis and Matthew J. Rogers. Released as a single from Human: The Double Album, the song became a major country radio hit and eventually reached No. 1.

The song’s message encourages listeners to make the most of their relationships and opportunities instead of waiting for a better time. Its success pushed Johnson further into the mainstream and introduced his music to audiences beyond his established Texas and country fan base.

“‘Til You Can’t” became one of the defining songs of Johnson’s career. It won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song and received two CMA Awards, while also becoming his first No. 1 single.

The success of the song helped establish Johnson as one of the prominent traditional-leaning voices in modern country music. Rather than abandoning the sound that had built his original audience, he continued emphasizing storytelling, live musicianship and themes drawn from everyday American life.

Leather and Continued Success

Johnson followed Human: The Double Album with Leather in 2023. The album continued his exploration of traditional country music while incorporating stories about love, family, hard work and the realities of life.

Leather became another major success and won the CMA Award for Album of the Year. The album’s deluxe edition expanded the project and helped maintain Johnson’s momentum as one of country music’s most commercially successful traditional artists.

Among the songs associated with this period was “The Painter,” an uplifting love song that became another No. 1 single for Johnson in 2024. He also recorded “I’m Gonna Love You,” a duet with Carrie Underwood that reached No. 1 in 2025.

Johnson’s success during this period was also reflected in his touring career. He continued playing large arenas and festivals while maintaining a strong connection with the live audience that had supported him since his independent years.

Awards and Recognition

Cody Johnson has received recognition from several of the major organizations in country music. His career honors include CMA Awards and ACM Awards, as well as the Grammy Award connected to “‘Til You Can’t.” His CMA achievements include Album of the Year for Leather and Male Vocalist of the Year in 2025.

In May 2026, Johnson reached another major milestone when he won both Entertainer of the Year and Male Artist of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards. The victories brought his career total to four ACM Awards.

He also received four nominations for the 60th Annual CMA Awards in September 2026. The nominations included Entertainer of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Single of the Year for “The Fall” and Video of the Year for “The Fall.” At that point, he had accumulated 19 CMA Award nominations throughout his career.

Banks of the Trinity

In June 2026, Johnson released his sixth album, Banks of the Trinity, through COJO Music and Warner Records Nashville. The 16-track album was produced by longtime collaborator Trent Willmon and includes collaborations with Luke Combs and Brothers Osborne.

The album represents a particularly personal chapter in Johnson’s career. Its title refers to the Trinity River and the environment in which he grew up in Texas. Rather than focusing solely on his recent success, Johnson used the project to look back at his childhood, family, rural upbringing and the experiences that shaped him.

The album also came after a difficult period in Johnson’s personal life. While preparing for the record, he suffered a burst eardrum following a sinus and upper respiratory infection. The resulting break from touring gave him time to recover, spend time with his family and reconsider the material he wanted to record.

Banks of the Trinity expands Johnson’s musical palette while retaining his commitment to traditional country. The album incorporates influences ranging from bluegrass and rock to soul and Motown, while its songs continue to center on the stories and experiences that have defined his songwriting.

Musical Style and Legacy

Cody Johnson’s music is closely associated with traditional and Texas country. His songs often feature straightforward storytelling, prominent guitars, strong vocals and themes drawn from family, relationships, work, faith, rural life and personal responsibility.

His background as a rodeo competitor and his years as an independent musician have also become important parts of his public identity. Rather than separating his music from those experiences, Johnson has frequently incorporated them into his songs and performances, giving his work a distinctly personal character.

His career is also notable for the path he took to major success. Johnson spent years building an audience independently before joining a major label, allowing him to establish a loyal fan base before achieving mainstream recognition. His subsequent success, including No. 1 singles, major awards, billions of streams and increasingly large concert audiences, has made him one of the most recognizable Texas-rooted artists in contemporary country music.
