Charity Gayle grew up in Buffalo, New York, in a family deeply involved in Christian ministry. Her mother directed a church choir, and Gayle has described watching choir rehearsals as one of her formative musical experiences. By the age of 16, she was already directing multiple choirs herself. Her early exposure to church music played a major role in shaping her approach to worship and songwriting.
Her interest in worship eventually developed into active ministry. Before becoming widely recognized as a recording artist, Gayle served as a worship pastor and music ministry director. She also became involved with People & Songs and its Emerging Sound community, contributing vocals and songwriting to projects designed to develop new Christian music artists.
Gayle spent two years in Nashville in 2014 and 2015, where she developed her songwriting and became increasingly interested in writing music specifically for the church. Her early songwriting included “Amen”, “Psalm 100 (Enter In)”, “Cleansed” and “New Name Written Down in Glory”. She also received recognition as GMA Immerse Vocalist of the Year in 2012.
Her recording career began with “Divine Exchange”, released in 2014, followed by an EP of the same name in 2015. She subsequently released her first full-length album, Lord You Are My Song, in January 2018. The album included songs such as “Amen”, “Great Is His Faithfulness”, “Divine Exchange”, “Nothing But the Blood”, “What Mercy Did for Me” and “Benediction”.
Lord You Are My Song established Gayle more firmly as a contemporary worship artist. Her music continued to receive attention through worship conferences, church events and collaborations, while her songwriting remained focused on biblical themes and congregational worship.
Her major breakthrough came with Endless Praise, released in September 2021. The album included “Thank You Jesus for the Blood”, “I Speak Jesus”, “New Name Written Down in Glory”, “We Need a Miracle”, “Endless Praise”, “Throne Room Song” and “Echo (In Jesus Name)”.
“Thank You Jesus for the Blood” became one of Gayle’s signature songs. She and her husband, Ryan Kennedy, co-wrote the song with David Gentiles, Bryan McCleery and Steven Musso during a songwriting retreat in Texas in 2019. The song focuses on the Christian understanding of Christ’s sacrifice and redemption and has subsequently been adopted by churches in different parts of the world.
“I Speak Jesus” has also become closely associated with Gayle’s ministry. The song, featured on Endless Praise, is centered on the name of Jesus and has become one of her most recognized worship recordings.
Gayle’s music draws from contemporary Christian worship while incorporating strong gospel influences. Her vocal approach emphasizes powerful lead singing, layered harmonies and arrangements designed to work both as recorded music and as congregational worship.
She has spoken about her love for gospel harmonies and her desire to bring together different musical voices in worship. Her songwriting similarly focuses on biblical language, Christian doctrine and themes that can be easily adopted by church congregations. This combination of contemporary worship production and gospel-rooted vocal expression has become an important part of her musical identity.
In April 2024, Gayle released Rejoice, a live album featuring 14 tracks. The project included “Rejoice”, “Come Alive”, “You Keep Your Promises”, “I Believe”, “Because of Jesus”, “Nothing But the Blood”, “Name Above All Names”, “This Is My Story”, “You Are Glorious”, “Sweetest Name I Know” and “Seed of Faith”.
Her subsequent releases have included “I Believe” and “Emmanuel”, the latter featuring Ryan Kennedy. In January 2026, she released “How Great Is Our God”, demonstrating that her recording career remains active alongside her continuing work in worship ministry.
Gayle has collaborated with a number of Christian artists and worship musicians throughout her career. Her work with Ryan Kennedy has been particularly significant, both musically and in ministry. The couple lead worship together and are involved with GatherHouse, a worship and prayer movement focused on creating a culture of continual prayer and worship.
Her songwriting has also received industry recognition. Gayle received a Dove Award for “Benediction (As You Go)”, which appeared on Selah’s album Firm Foundation. Her work has consequently extended beyond her own recordings into songs performed and recorded by other Christian artists.
