About Bucy Radebe

Bucy Radebe, born Phumulani Radebe, is a South African gospel singer and songwriter from Maboloka in the North West Province. Known for her powerful voice and emotionally expressive approach to gospel music, she combines contemporary Christian music with traditional African gospel influences. Before establishing herself as a solo artist, Radebe spent years developing her craft as a backing vocalist and choral performer, experiences that helped shape the distinctive sound of her later work.

Radebe came to wider attention after launching her solo career with the live album Spiritual Encounter in 2020. The project produced the widely recognized song “Uzugcin’Impilo Yam'” and established her as one of the notable newer voices in South African gospel. Since then, she has released several live projects, earned major South African music awards and performed at large gospel and cultural events across the country.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Radebe grew up in a musical environment and began singing while she was still a child. Her early musical development took place through school and church choirs, where she gained experience in choral singing and Christian worship.

She later became a member of the youth choir at AFM House of Praise in Mabopane. Her involvement in choral music continued with Kopano Chorus, giving her an opportunity to perform in a more structured ensemble setting and develop her vocal technique.

Her musical education expanded considerably when she joined Opera Africa in 2008. During her time with the organization, she participated in major operatic productions including Aida, La Bohรจme and Carmen. The experience exposed her to classical vocal performance and broadened her understanding of music beyond gospel.

Radebe also worked with a number of established South African gospel performers as a backing vocalist. Among the artists with whom she has worked are Solly Mahlangu, Takie Ndou, Mmatema Moremi and Zaza. She was also associated with the Spirit of Praise choir.

Transition to a Solo Career

After years of working behind established performers, Radebe decided to pursue her own career as a solo gospel artist. She began making that transition around 2019, bringing with her years of experience in church choirs, professional choral work and backing vocals.

Her first major solo project was recorded live at the Mmabatho Convention Centre in 2019. The resulting album, Spiritual Encounter, was released in 2020 and immediately became an important milestone in her career.

The album contained a mixture of original material, gospel standards and medleys. Its songs included “Uzugcin’Impilo Yam’,” “Ke Tla Sejara Sefapano,” “Excess Love,” “Ha Ke Khumama,” “Thuma Mina,” “Worrier’s Medley” and “Church Medley.”

Breakthrough with Spiritual Encounter

Spiritual Encounter established Radebe as a solo recording artist and introduced her music to a much wider audience. The project reportedly accumulated tens of millions of streams and achieved Gold sales status.

One of its defining songs was “Uzugcin’Impilo Yam’,” which became especially popular among South African gospel listeners. Its success helped take Radebe’s music beyond traditional church audiences and led to appearances at broader mainstream events.

The success of the project also brought industry recognition. In 2020, Radebe won Best Newcomer of the Year at the Crown Gospel Awards.

At the 2021 South African Music Awards, she received two major honours, including Best Newcomer of the Year and Best Traditional Faith Album of the Year. These awards established her as one of the important emerging figures in South African gospel music.

The Grace Encounter Projects

Following the success of her debut, Radebe continued developing her live-recording approach with The Grace Encounter Vol. 1, released in 2022. The project was recorded at the Sun City Superbowl, one of South Africa’s major entertainment venues.

She followed it with The Grace Encounter Vol. 2 in 2023. The project continued her emphasis on live worship, large-scale arrangements and traditional and contemporary gospel influences.

Songs associated with these projects further demonstrated Radebe’s ability to combine powerful lead vocals with large choral arrangements. Her music frequently moves between English and South African languages, reflecting the multilingual character of gospel music in the country.

Praise and Worship in the Wilderness

In June 2025, Radebe recorded another major live project at the Sun City Superbowl. Titled Praise and Worship in the Wilderness, the album was released in October 2025.

The project represented another stage in the development of her live ministry and recording career. Rather than moving away from the gospel sound that established her, Radebe continued building around worship, testimony and large choral performances.

Her live concerts have also featured collaborations with established South African gospel and inspirational performers, including Jabu Hlongwane, Vusi Nova and Rebecca Malope.

Awards and Recognition

Radebe’s career has been marked by recognition from some of South Africa’s major gospel and music-award institutions. Her early success earned her the Best Newcomer of the Year award at the Crown Gospel Awards in 2020.

She subsequently received two South African Music Awards in 2021. In 2026, she won Best Traditional Faith Album of the Year at the South African Music Awards again, making the category one of the recurring areas of recognition in her career.

Her achievements have helped establish her among the leading younger voices in South African gospel, particularly within the traditional faith and live worship space.

Musical Style and Ministry

Radebe’s musical identity is shaped by her unusually broad background. Her early church and choral experience gave her a foundation in gospel singing, while her years with Opera Africa exposed her to classical vocal techniques and large-scale theatrical production.

That combination is reflected in the strength and range of her performances. Her recordings frequently feature large ensembles and live instrumentation, while her lead vocals remain at the center of the arrangements.

Her repertoire includes songs of worship, prayer, encouragement and testimony. She often performs in multiple South African languages, allowing her music to connect with audiences across different linguistic communities.

Personal Life

Radebe is married to Thapelo Thoboke, who is also involved in her career as her executive producer and manager. The couple met in 2018 while Radebe was working as a backing vocalist and later built her solo career together.

She generally keeps much of her private life away from the public spotlight, with her public identity focused primarily on music, worship and ministry.

Legacy

Bucy Radebe’s career reflects a progression from church choir singer and professional backing vocalist to an award-winning solo gospel artist. Her background in both gospel and classical music has given her a broad vocal foundation, while her live recordings have become the central format through which she presents her music.
