Early Life and Musical Background

Wilson grew up in Bellwood, Illinois, in the Chicago area. Music was part of his childhood through his involvement in church. In an interview with WQCS, he recalled singing with his father’s male chorus and being encouraged to lead songs at church. Those early experiences helped him recognize his vocal ability, although he did not initially view music as a career.

While attending college, Wilson began to take his musical ability more seriously. He sang in the University of Illinois Black Chorus under the direction of Dr. Ollie Watts Davis, whom he has identified as an important influence on his development as a singer. His university years gave him formal ensemble experience while exposing him to a broader range of musical styles and performers.

His influences extend beyond traditional gospel. His musical approach has incorporated elements associated with soul, R&B and contemporary Christian music, and AllMusic has noted the influence of artists ranging from Donny Hathaway and Fred Hammond to John Mayer.

Education and Career Before Music

Wilson attended the University of Illinois, where he studied liberal arts and sciences with an emphasis on economics. During his time at the university, he remained active in music through the Black Chorus while developing an academic and professional path outside the entertainment industry.

After university, he entered the pharmaceutical industry and worked as a pharmaceutical representative. Music remained part of his life during this period, but it was initially something he pursued alongside his professional career.

His move to Houston eventually changed that direction. While working in the pharmaceutical industry, Wilson became increasingly involved in church music. He sang on a recording by Windsor Village United Methodist Church in Houston, including the song “Awesome God.” The recording became a regional success and encouraged him to consider music as more than a side pursuit.

Beginning of His Music Ministry

Wilson’s professional start in music ministry came through his involvement with churches in Houston. He became music director at St. John’s Downtown Church, a ministry connected to Windsor Village, and began developing his skills as a worship leader and music director.

His work brought him into contact with Rudy Rasmus and eventually Mathew Knowles, the music executive known for his work with Music World Entertainment. Knowles signed Wilson to Spirit Rising Music/Music World Entertainment, providing the opportunity for him to make a full-length recording.

That opportunity came after Wilson had already spent years balancing music with a corporate career. His decision to leave that career and pursue music represented a major leap of faith and became an important part of the story surrounding his emergence as a recording artist.

Recording Career and Breakthrough

Wilson released his debut album, Just Love, in 2009. Produced by Stan Jones, the album introduced a polished sound that combined contemporary gospel with soulful vocals and inspirational songwriting. It entered the Billboard Gospel Albums chart at number two and established Wilson as one of the notable new male voices in gospel music.

The album produced several important songs, including “Already Here,” “Awesome God,” “Just Love” and “All I Need.” “All I Need” became particularly significant, spending an extended period on the gospel singles chart and helping establish Wilson’s reputation as an artist capable of combining radio-friendly production with a strong Christian message.

His second album, So Proud, followed in 2012. The project continued his progression toward contemporary gospel while maintaining the smooth vocal style that had become associated with his music. Around the same period, Wilson also became a member of United Tenors, a gospel supergroup featuring Fred Hammond, Dave Hollister and Eric Roberson.

Major Albums and Musical Style

In 2015, Wilson released Worth Fighting For through Motown Gospel. The album became one of the most important projects of his career, earning him a GMA Dove Award for Traditional Gospel Album of the Year. Its title track also received significant recognition, including a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Performance/Song and a Billboard Music Award nomination.

The success of Worth Fighting For strengthened Wilson’s identity as an artist whose music could be both devotional and broadly accessible. His songs frequently address perseverance and the decision to continue trusting God through difficult circumstances. The title track in particular became closely associated with this message.

His fourth major solo album, A Great Work, was released in 2018. The project earned two Grammy nominations at the 61st Grammy Awards, including Best Gospel Album and Best Gospel Performance/Song for the title track.

Wilson later released Still, another project built around themes of faith, encouragement and spiritual reassurance. His music has generally retained a balance between traditional gospel foundations and contemporary R&B-influenced production, while his tenor voice remains one of the defining features of his sound.

Collaborations and Recognition

Collaboration has been an important part of Wilson’s career. His work with United Tenors placed him alongside established gospel and soul singers, while his solo catalogue has included collaborations with artists such as Fred Hammond, Hezekiah Walker, Ledisi, Yolanda Adams and Tasha Cobbs Leonard.

Wilson has received recognition from several major organizations within gospel and popular music. He is a multiple Stellar Award winner and GMA Dove Award winner, as well as an ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Award recipient. He has also received nominations for an NAACP Image Award and Billboard Music Awards.

At the Grammy Awards, Wilson has received three nominations. In 2016, “Worth Fighting For” was nominated for Best Gospel Performance/Song. In 2019, A Great Work was nominated for Best Gospel Album, while the album’s title song was nominated for Best Gospel Performance/Song.

Recent Career and Legacy

Wilson has continued to work as both a recording artist and live performer, maintaining a career that connects gospel music, church ministry and inspirational performance. He has performed on major television and gospel platforms, including Good Morning America, The Wendy Williams Show, the Stellar Awards, the Dove Awards and BET’s Celebration of Gospel.

His career has also developed beyond recording and touring. In May 2025, Wilson earned a Master of Arts in Public Ministry from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, adding formal theological and ministry education to the musical and church experience that had shaped his career for decades.
