About Testimony Jaga

Testimony Jaga is a Nigerian gospel singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and recording artist known for his energetic fusion of gospel music with Fuji, Apala, Afro-pop, and contemporary African sounds. Born Salau Aliu Olayiwola in Ibadan, Oyo State, he developed a distinctive style that he describes as “Fujipop,” combining the rhythmic character of indigenous Nigerian music with Christian messages of faith, praise, testimony, and evangelism.

Jaga began his professional career in secular music before turning fully to gospel music in the early 2010s. His transition was strongly influenced by his Christian conversion and subsequent involvement with Christ Embassy, where he became part of the Loveworld music ministry under Pastor Chris Oyakhilome. His experiences became central to his testimony and eventually shaped the name and message behind his artistic career.

Over the years, Testimony Jaga has become particularly known for taking gospel music beyond conventional church settings. Through his Street Gospel Movement, he combines music with outreach and social welfare, taking the gospel to people in places where traditional church structures may not reach them. His energetic performances, Yoruba and English lyrics, and street-oriented presentation have made him one of the distinctive voices in Nigeria’s contemporary gospel scene.

Early Life and Musical Background

Salau Aliu Olayiwola was born in Ibadan, Oyo State, and has roots in the Remo area of Ogun State. He grew up in a large family and developed an interest in music while he was still young.

His attraction to music became particularly noticeable during his secondary-school years. According to accounts of his early life, a church choir that used his school premises for rehearsals caught his attention. He became interested in the music and eventually became involved with the church.

Although his early musical interests eventually took him toward secular entertainment, the influence of indigenous Nigerian music remained important. Fuji and Apala, in particular, shaped his understanding of rhythm, vocal delivery, Yoruba-language expression, and performance.

These influences later became central to the musical identity he developed as a gospel artist.

Secular Music and Turning Point

Before becoming known as Testimony Jaga, Olayiwola was involved in secular music. He worked with established Nigerian entertainers, including Fuji musician Abass Akande Obesere, and released music during this period.

His experience in secular entertainment exposed him to professional recording, live performance, music production, and the realities of the Nigerian music industry. However, he later described this period as one in which he experienced frustration and uncertainty despite his ambitions.

A major turning point came in 2011. Olayiwola was arrested and detained in connection with an alleged robbery case. He was eventually cleared of the allegations and released after several months.

The experience became one of the defining moments of his life. Following his release, he decided to redirect his musical career toward gospel music and began pursuing a very different purpose for his talent.

Transition to Gospel Music

Testimony Jaga’s gospel career began around 2012. His transition brought him into the Loveworld music ministry associated with Christ Embassy and Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.

The experience gave him a new environment in which to develop his musical and ministerial abilities. He became involved in church music and began building a reputation for energetic praise and evangelistic performances.

Rather than abandoning the musical traditions that had shaped him, Jaga incorporated them into his gospel music. Fuji and Apala rhythms became part of his signature sound, while his lyrics shifted toward themes of salvation, gratitude, God’s faithfulness, miracles, and personal testimony.

His music also became strongly connected to his life story. The name “Jaga” is associated with the phrase “Jesus Associate God’s Ambassador,” reflecting the identity he adopted as a gospel minister.

Breakthrough with Igara and Gone for Life

Testimony Jaga’s emergence as a widely recognized gospel artist accelerated with the release of “Igara” in 2018. The song showcased his distinctive combination of energetic African rhythms, Yoruba expression, contemporary gospel, and a highly animated performance style.

“Igara” became an important milestone in his career and helped introduce his music to a broader Nigerian gospel audience. It also earned recognition at the Loveworld International Music and Arts Awards, commonly known as the LIMA Awards.

Another important song from this period was “Gone for Life.” Together, these releases established the musical formula that would become closely associated with Jaga: high-energy praise, indigenous Nigerian musical influences, simple but memorable hooks, and lyrics built around Christian testimony.

His growing popularity demonstrated that gospel music could reach audiences through sounds and performance styles traditionally associated with secular Nigerian popular music.

Street Gospel Movement

One of the most important parts of Testimony Jaga’s ministry is the Street Gospel Movement. He developed the initiative around the belief that the gospel should reach people outside traditional church environments.

The movement combines music, evangelism, social welfare, and practical outreach. Rather than waiting for people to come into a church, Jaga and those working with him take music and the Christian message into streets and communities.

This approach is closely connected to his own background and his belief that his music should speak to people who may not ordinarily attend church services.

His performances through the movement are often energetic and informal, reflecting the environment in which they take place. This has helped him develop a reputation for what is sometimes described as “street gospel,” a form of Christian music designed to communicate directly with people in everyday settings.

The movement has therefore become more than a branding concept. It represents a central part of Jaga’s understanding of gospel ministry.

Musical Style and Notable Songs

Testimony Jaga’s music is built around a distinctive fusion of indigenous Nigerian music and contemporary gospel. Fuji and Apala are particularly important influences, while elements of Afro-pop, hip-hop, dance music, and modern praise are also present in his recordings.

He frequently performs in English, Yoruba, and Nigerian Pidgin, allowing his songs to connect with audiences across different linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Some of his best-known songs include “Igara,” “Jehovah,” “Gone for Life,” “Take It,” “Kpansa Kpansa,” “Jesus,” “Biggie Biggie,” “Jehovah Doer,” “My Style,” “My Evidence,” “Power in My Praise,” “I Don’t Care,” and “Not Normal.”

His collaboration with Frank Edwards on “My Evidence” introduced another dimension to his sound, while “Not Normal,” featuring Akpororo, demonstrated his ability to work with other contemporary Nigerian gospel performers.

He has also collaborated with artists including Mike Abdul, Israel Strong, Neon Adejo, Adeyinka Alaseyori, Henrisoul, Bidemi Olaoba, and others.

Albums and Recent Music

Although much of Testimony Jaga’s discography has been built around singles and collaborative releases, he has also released larger projects. His 2023 project Jesus Is Here, Jaga Is Here featured songs such as “Hallelujah,” with Neon Adejo, “Anu,” featuring Adeyinka Alaseyori, “Jolly,” featuring Henrisoul, and “Happiness Is Free.”

The project reinforced the connection between his personal identity and his gospel message, while giving him room to explore different musical styles.

In 2024, he released Fuji Rhapsody, a project that placed the indigenous Fuji influence more prominently at the center of his gospel music.

His musical activity continued into 2025 and 2026 with releases including “DODOnDAWA,” “Na Only Me Know,” “Moving Forward,” “O Sure Ju,” “Odun Tun Tun,” “Datiemo,” “ร€sรจ,” “Holy,” “Denge Pose,” “The Truth,” and “Follow Me Worship.”

These later releases demonstrate that Jaga has continued to experiment with his signature sound rather than remaining tied to the style of his early breakthrough years.

Awards, Ministry and Legacy

Testimony Jaga has received significant recognition within the Loveworld and Nigerian gospel music communities. His awards and honors include multiple LIMA recognitions, including New Artist of the Year and Best New Artist in 2017, Best Song recognitions in subsequent years, and Artist of the Year recognition.

He has also received honors from organizations outside the LIMA Awards, including Coolwealth Awards and Golden Star Awards. His recognition has extended beyond music performance to include evangelism, youth engagement, outreach, and humanitarian work.

One of the notable aspects of Jaga’s career is the way he has connected music with social responsibility. His Street Gospel Movement and other outreach activities have allowed him to use his growing profile to support people in need while communicating his Christian message.

His career also represents a broader development within Nigerian gospel music. Gospel artists increasingly draw from indigenous genres and contemporary African sounds rather than limiting themselves to conventional church music. Jaga has been one of the artists at the forefront of this movement, using Fuji and Apala influences to create a sound that is unmistakably Nigerian while remaining explicitly Christian.

Today, Testimony Jaga remains an active gospel artist and minister, continuing to release music, perform, collaborate with other artists, and participate in evangelistic outreach. His journey from secular music through a difficult personal period to becoming an influential gospel performer has become an important part of his public testimony.
