Sidney Mohede is an Indonesian Christian singer, songwriter, worship leader and pastor whose work has played an important role in the development of contemporary Christian worship music in Indonesia. Born in Jakarta on March 27, 1973, Mohede spent much of his youth in Southern California before returning to Indonesia in 1995. He became known through groups including Giving My Best (GMB), Voice of Generation (VOG) and True Worshippers, and later established a significant solo career alongside his ministry work with Jakarta Praise Community Church (JPCC).
Mohede is particularly recognized for combining contemporary pop and worship music with a strong emphasis on congregational singing and songwriting. Over the course of his career, he has written or co-written hundreds of songs and has been involved in numerous worship recordings. His international profile grew considerably through “Hosanna (Be Lifted Higher),” a song he wrote for True Worshippers that was later recorded by Israel Houghton and featured on Houghton’s Grammy-winning album Love God Love People.
Beyond recording and performing, Mohede has built much of his career around worship ministry, mentoring younger musicians and serving the local church. He serves as an Associate Pastor of Worship at JPCC alongside his wife, Etha Mohede, and remains active as a worship leader, songwriter, teacher and recording artist.

Sidney Mohede was born in Jakarta and spent his teenage years in Los Angeles, California. His time in the United States became an important part of his musical and spiritual development. Mohede became a Christian at the age of 17 while attending a small Indonesian church in Los Angeles. Because of his natural ability in singing and music, he soon became involved with the church’s worship team and began leading worship for its youth ministry.
His experience in the United States exposed him to contemporary Christian music while also keeping him connected to Indonesian Christian communities. In 1995, after spending roughly a decade in the United States, Mohede returned to Jakarta. His return marked the beginning of a long-term career that would eventually place him among the better-known worship leaders in Indonesia.
After returning to Indonesia, Mohede became increasingly involved in church ministry and Christian music. His development was shaped as much by practical ministry as by formal study. His early years in Indonesian Christian music gave him opportunities to work alongside musicians who would become important figures in the country’s worship scene.
His decision to return to Indonesia was significant because it shifted his focus from simply developing as a musician to using music as part of a broader ministry. That combination of musicianship, songwriting and pastoral service would remain central to his career.
Mohede’s professional Christian music journey gathered momentum in the mid-1990s. After returning to Jakarta, he became involved with Giving My Best, better known as GMB, and also participated in Voice of Generation. These groups became important platforms for his development as a vocalist, songwriter and worship leader.
His association with GMB was particularly influential. He spent more than a decade with the group, appearing on a number of its projects and helping establish its sound among Indonesian Christian listeners. He was also part of VOG’s second album, Tutur Kata, alongside musicians including Sari Simorangkir and Amos Cahyadi.
During this period, Mohede also became increasingly associated with the worship ministry that grew around Jakarta Praise Community Church. The worship team initially known as True Worshippers would eventually become JPCC Worship, giving him another major platform through which his songwriting and worship leadership could reach churches throughout Indonesia and beyond.
Mohede began his solo recording career with Surrender, an album that became an important early statement of his identity as a Christian artist. His subsequent work expanded his reach. Better Days followed as another major solo project, while Louder Than Life grew out of a landmark live concert in Jakarta in 2010 celebrating two decades of his worship ministry.
The concert brought together songs from different stages of his career and presented them through a mixture of rock, acoustic, orchestral and other arrangements. It demonstrated Mohede’s ability to move comfortably between intimate worship settings and large-scale musical productions.
Mohede later moved more deliberately into international English-language worship music with The Rescue. Released in 2013, the album included songs designed to connect with listeners beyond Indonesia and became an important milestone in his international ministry.
Mohede’s music is rooted in contemporary Christian worship but incorporates elements of pop, rock, acoustic music and modern praise-and-worship production. His approach is generally centered on accessible melodies, congregational participation and lyrics focused on faith, surrender, grace, God’s character and personal devotion.
Songwriting is particularly important to his artistic identity. Rather than treating worship music simply as performance, Mohede has consistently approached it as a way of communicating faith within a church community. His work with GMB, True Worshippers and JPCC Worship helped establish a style of Indonesian worship music that could function both in congregational settings and on commercial recordings.
His collaborations have also broadened his musical vocabulary. He has worked with Indonesian musicians including Andi Rianto, Dewa Budjana, Ronald Steven and Dira Sugandi, as well as international Christian artists such as Chris Tomlin, Darlene Zschech and Israel Houghton.
Among Mohede’s best-known songs is “Hosanna (Be Lifted Higher),” which he originally wrote for True Worshippers. The song became internationally recognized after Israel Houghton recorded it and included it on Love God Love People. Houghton’s album subsequently won the Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album in 2011, giving Mohede’s songwriting an international platform.
His solo catalogue includes Surrender, Better Days, Louder Than Life, The Rescue, It Is Well and From Him, Through Him and for Him. His later releases have included songs such as “Only You,” “Karya yang Besar,” “Jangkar Hidupku,” “Hanya Kau Yesus,” “Jadikan Aku Indah,” “Hanya Yesus” and “Waktu Yang Sama.”
His catalogue also reflects a willingness to work across languages and musical settings. The Rescue represented an important English-language chapter, while songs from his Indonesian catalogue have continued to circulate through churches and Christian music platforms in Indonesia and other parts of Asia.
Collaboration has remained one of the defining features of Mohede’s career. His work with True Worshippers and later JPCC Worship helped him influence a generation of Indonesian worship musicians, while his songwriting collaborations with international artists brought elements of Indonesian worship music into a wider Christian music audience.
His influence extends beyond his recordings. Mohede has spent much of his career developing younger worship leaders and musicians through church ministry, teaching and conferences. At JPCC, he has served in several pastoral and ministry capacities, including youth ministry, before taking on a broader worship leadership role.
Mohede remains active in both music and ministry. His recent catalogue includes releases from 2024 and 2025, including The Price of Grace, The Victory of Grace, “Hanya Yesus” and “Waktu Yang Sama.” He also continues to participate in JPCC’s ministry as a preacher, teacher and worship leader.
