Ntokozo Mbambo is a South African gospel singer, songwriter, worship leader and minister whose career spans more than two decades. Born on November 6, 1985, in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, she became known nationally as one of the powerful voices of the gospel group Joyous Celebration before establishing an acclaimed solo career. Her music is rooted in Christian worship and combines South African gospel traditions with contemporary arrangements, expressive vocals and a strong emphasis on congregational praise.
Mbambo’s journey into professional music began remarkably early. She joined Joyous Celebration at the age of 15, becoming the youngest member of the group at the time and eventually serving as one of its lead singers and voice coaches. Her long association with the group gave her extensive experience on major stages across Africa before she stepped out to concentrate on her solo ministry.
As a solo artist, she has released several successful projects, including Filled, Spirit and Life, Moments in Time and Lavish Worship. The latter became a major commercial and critical success, earning her three South African Music Awards. Songs such as “Jehovah Is Your Name,” “Makabongwe,” “We Pray for More” and “Here on Our Knees” have further established her as one of the leading voices in contemporary African gospel music.

Ntokozo Mbambo was born and raised in Umlazi, a township in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Her parents played an important role in introducing her to music and gave her opportunities to sing in the church worship team while she was still young.
She demonstrated an unusually strong vocal ability as a child. At just 13, she appeared on Mthunzi Namba’s album Let It Rain, an early indication of the career that lay ahead. Her involvement in church music continued to grow, eventually leading to her invitation to join Joyous Celebration.
At 15, Mbambo became the youngest member of the internationally recognized gospel group. The opportunity placed her alongside experienced musicians and worship leaders and gave her a platform from which to develop her voice and stage presence.
Mbambo pursued education alongside her growing music career. She studied Information Technology programming at Durban North Varsity College, completing the programme in 2006. She later attended the University of Zululand, where she earned a Bachelor of Education degree with studies in English Language and Literature and Social Sciences.
Her educational background reflects an interest in developing skills beyond music. Although singing became the central focus of her professional life, education remained an important part of her personal development.
Mbambo spent approximately 13 years with Joyous Celebration, becoming one of the group’s most recognizable vocalists. She progressed from being a young member to a lead singer and eventually worked as a voice coach, helping other singers develop their vocal abilities.
During this period, she also pursued her own recordings. Her debut solo album, Bambelela, was released in 2001, establishing her as a recording artist while she was still active with Joyous Celebration.
In 2007, she released the live album and DVD Keep on Believing. The project earned a Metro FM Music Award nomination for Best Gospel Album and three nominations at the Crown Gospel Music Awards.
The album was produced by musician Nqubeko Mbatha, who later became her husband. Their professional relationship developed alongside their personal relationship, and the two have continued to collaborate extensively in music.
In 2011, Mbambo left Joyous Celebration to concentrate fully on her solo career. She subsequently signed with Koko Records, beginning a new phase in which her own musical identity and ministry became the primary focus.
Her next major project was Filled, recorded at the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg and released in 2012. The live project became a major success and was eventually certified double platinum in South Africa. It also earned recognition at the South African Music Awards, Crown Gospel Music Awards and African Gospel Music and Media Awards.
The success of Filled confirmed that Mbambo could successfully transition from being a member of one of Africa’s best-known gospel groups to becoming a leading solo performer.
She followed it with Spirit and Life in 2015. The album continued her emphasis on worship and spiritual encouragement and earned further recognition, including awards at the African Gospel Music and Media Awards.
Mbambo’s music is built around worship, praise and gospel songwriting, with a strong South African character. Her performances frequently move between quiet, intimate worship and powerful declarations, making her equally effective in personal listening and large congregational settings.
Her vocal range and expressive delivery are among the most recognizable aspects of her sound. She performs primarily in English and isiZulu, allowing her music to connect naturally with audiences across South Africa and the wider African gospel community.
“Jehovah Is Your Name” is among her best-known recordings. Her extended live interpretation of the worship song became particularly popular and helped introduce her music to a wider international audience.
Other notable songs include “Makabongwe,” “We Pray for More,” “Fill Us Again,” “Imisebenzi Yakho,” “Here on Our Knees,” “Before Your Throne” and “Flow Spirit.” Her collaboration with Nigerian gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey on “Before Your Throne” further connected her ministry with the broader African worship movement.
In 2018, Mbambo marked 20 years in the music industry with Moments in Time, an intimate concert that revisited significant moments from her career. The experience subsequently inspired a surprise album released on her birthday that year.
She continued expanding her catalog with live recordings and worship projects before releasing Lavish Worship in March 2023. The project became one of the defining releases of her career.
Lavish Worship received major industry recognition at the South African Music Awards, where Mbambo won three awards, including Female Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Best Contemporary Faith Album. She also won Best Gospel Album at the Metro FM Music Awards.
The project’s success reinforced Mbambo’s position as a leading contemporary gospel artist and introduced her music to an even broader international audience.
Mbambo has received numerous awards throughout her career. Her honors include multiple South African Music Awards, African Gospel Music and Media Awards, Crown Gospel Music Awards and Praise Achievement Awards, as well as recognition from Metro FM and the Basadi in Music Awards.
Her achievements have extended beyond recorded music. She has served as a judge on the South African gospel television competition I Want to Sing Gospel and appeared as a guest judge on Idols South Africa in 2021.
In July 2024, she performed the South African national anthem before a Springboks rugby match against Ireland at Kings Park Stadium in Durban. The performance became another prominent public moment in her career and highlighted the national reach of her voice.
Ntokozo Mbambo married musician and producer Nqubeko Mbatha in May 2008. Their marriage has also developed into a long-running creative partnership, with Mbatha contributing to several of her musical projects. The couple have children and are based in Johannesburg.
Mbambo is also passionate about mentoring singers and developing other musicians. Her years as a voice coach within Joyous Celebration contributed to this side of her ministry, and she continues to encourage emerging worship leaders and vocalists.
She remains active as a recording artist and worship minister. Her recent releases include Glory Overflow (Live), United Altar Sounds: Prayer Room and the single “You Are Good,” released in March 2026. She has also continued collaborating with artists from South Africa and other parts of Africa, including appearances on worship recordings with Mmuso Worship and other contemporary gospel acts.
Ntokozo Mbambo’s career represents one of the more enduring stories in contemporary South African gospel music. She began singing professionally as a teenager, became one of Joyous Celebration’s youngest and most prominent members, and then successfully built an independent career that has earned major commercial and industry recognition.
Her influence comes not only from her recordings but also from her role as a worship leader and mentor. She has helped connect generations of South African gospel listeners through a style that combines traditional Christian worship with contemporary production and powerful vocal performance.
