Neon Adejo was born in Lagos and is the eldest of six children. He grew up in a Muslim household before becoming a Christian, an experience that later became an important part of his testimony and musical identity. His journey of faith strongly influences the message behind his songs and his understanding of music as a means of ministry.
Adejo developed an interest in singing during his teenage years and began singing at 13. He later studied History and International Relations at Kogi State University, graduating in 2013. By the following year, he had begun pursuing music professionally.
His early experiences also included periods of significant personal hardship. Adejo has spoken about experiencing homelessness and difficult circumstances while growing up, experiences that have contributed to the themes of gratitude, grace and divine preservation that recur throughout his music.
Adejo officially began his professional music career in 2014, initially establishing himself within Nigeria’s gospel music community through songwriting, worship leading and independent releases. His approach was different from conventional contemporary gospel in that he sought to combine the language and rhythms of African music with the message of Christian worship.
He later became associated with the term “Afroworship,” which he uses to describe music that communicates the gospel through African musical expression. His style incorporates contemporary gospel, soulful melodies and elements of R&B while retaining a strong worship focus.
As his audience grew, Adejo shared platforms with established gospel ministers including Sinach, Nathaniel Bassey, Donnie McClurkin, Travis Greene, Sonnie Badu, Sammie Okposo and Israel Houghton.
Adejo’s major breakthrough came with “Eze Ebube,” one of the defining songs of his career. The Igbo title translates roughly to “King of Glory,” and the song is built around gratitude and recognition of God’s faithfulness.
Adejo has explained that he wrote “Eze Ebube” after surviving a near-death experience. Although the song was written earlier, it took time before it gained widespread attention. Its message eventually resonated strongly with listeners, and the song became a popular worship anthem in Nigeria and among African Christian audiences internationally.
The song was released in more than one form, including the original version and the live recording “Eze Ebube II.” A later remix featured Sini Dagana and David Jones David. The song also generated numerous covers and worship renditions, helping it spread beyond Adejo’s immediate audience.
In 2023, “Eze Ebube” earned Adejo the Best Inspirational Single award at The Headies. He became the first gospel artist to win that category, making the recognition an important milestone in his career.
Adejo released his debut album, Tell the World, in 2020. The ten-track project introduced listeners to his developing sound and established his emphasis on worship, evangelism and personal testimony.
In March 2021, he released Songs of Gratitude, a five-track EP featuring two of his best-known songs, “Eze Ebube” and “Breathe Upon Me.” The project helped expand his audience considerably and positioned him as one of the emerging voices in Nigeria’s contemporary gospel scene.
His third major project, Nothing But the Gospel, arrived in September 2022. The seven-track project was largely recorded live and explored themes surrounding the gospel, God’s grace and the believer’s identity in Christ. Adejo described the album as an expression of his experience of God’s love and his desire to communicate that message through music.
He subsequently released Emerge and continued developing his sound through singles, collaborations and worship projects.
Adejo’s music is characterized by a combination of contemporary gospel, Christian R&B, soul and African musical influences. His use of African expressions alongside English lyrics gives his songs a distinctive identity while keeping them accessible to a broad international audience.
His concept of Afroworship is central to his artistic identity. Rather than treating African musical elements as simply a stylistic addition, Adejo uses them as a way of expressing Christian worship through an African cultural lens.
His songwriting also tends to be personal and testimony-driven. Gratitude, God’s faithfulness, salvation, grace and intimacy with God appear repeatedly in his work. His vocal delivery is generally warm and soulful, allowing him to move between intimate worship and more expansive praise.
Adejo’s growing influence has brought several awards and nominations. In 2023, he won Best Inspirational Single at The Headies for “Eze Ebube.” He also received multiple honors at the Kingdom Achievers Awards, including Songwriter of the Year, Spotlight Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for “Eze Ebube.”
The song also received recognition at the Praise Achievers Awards, where it won Song of the Year for Africa.
Beyond awards, Adejo’s international reach has grown through performances, tours and collaborations. His music has gained audiences in Africa, Europe and North America, while songs such as “Eze Ebube” and “Breathe Upon Me” have become particularly recognizable within contemporary African gospel music.
In 2025, Adejo entered into a partnership with Tribl Records, giving his music a wider international platform. The partnership connected him with a global worship community that includes several prominent contemporary Christian artists.
His work with Tribl has produced a new phase in his career, including the 2025 EP Now That I’m Found. The project features songs such as “Telling Everyone,” “Impress,” “On Time,” “He Won’t (Worship Medley)” and “Up Again.” These releases continue his movement toward a polished Christian R&B and worship sound while retaining the personal and Christ-centered message that has defined his work.
In 2026, Adejo released Sonship, a project centered on identity, grace and belonging in Christ. Songs from the project include “Captured Me,” “Love Assurance,” “Only You,” “Lovin On Me,” “Like Me,” “For Me” and “Favorite Baby.” He has also continued releasing singles and collaborations, including “Dancing My Way (Live)” and the “Parlour Worship Medley” with Victor Thompson, BBO and Promise Effiong.
Adejo also operates Kairos House and remains involved in developing gospel music and worship beyond his own recordings.
Neon Adejo has established himself as one of the Nigerian artists helping expand the boundaries of contemporary gospel and African worship music. His combination of soulful vocals, African musical influences and strongly personal Christian songwriting has given him a recognizable place within the modern gospel landscape.
