Early Life and Background

Kari Jobe was born in Waco, Texas, to Mark and Sandy Jobe and grew up in the Texas communities of Watauga and Hurst. Music and Christian faith were important parts of her childhood. She began singing when she was three years old and developed an interest in worship that would eventually become the foundation of her professional life.

By her teenage years, Jobe was already leading worship. She began leading worship publicly at about 13, and as she grew older she became involved with worship teams and Christian ministries in Texas. Her early experiences were not centred primarily on building a recording career. Instead, they gave her years of experience leading congregations and developing an understanding of worship as ministry.

Education and Ministry Beginnings

Jobe attended Oral Roberts University, Christ for the Nations Institute and Dallas Baptist University, where she studied areas including pastoral studies and psychology. Her education complemented the ministry work she was already pursuing and eventually helped shape her role as both a worship leader and pastor.

After completing her studies, Jobe became involved with Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas. She joined the church’s worship ministry and later served as an associate worship pastor. She also became part of Gateway Worship, the church’s collective of worship leaders and musicians. Gateway Worship’s growing profile gave her an important platform before she launched her solo career. The group’s 2008 album Wake Up the World reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Christian Albums chart.

Her years in church ministry were significant because they established the congregational style that would remain central to her music. Rather than approaching worship simply as a performance, Jobe consistently presented it as an invitation for people to participate.

Solo Career and Breakthrough

Jobe began releasing music independently before signing for a wider commercial release. Her major breakthrough as a solo artist came with her self-titled album, Kari Jobe, released in February 2009. The project reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Christian Albums chart and No. 67 on the Billboard 200. It also produced songs such as โ€œI’m Singingโ€ and โ€œHealer.โ€

One of the defining songs associated with the album was โ€œRevelation Song,โ€ a worship song originally written by Jennie Lee Riddle that became closely identified with Jobe through her recording and live ministry. The song helped establish the sound that would become characteristic of her early career: spacious arrangements, expressive vocals and lyrics designed to work both as personal devotion and congregational worship.

Jobe also recorded a Spanish-language version of her debut album, Le Canto. The project won the 2010 GMA Dove Award for Spanish Language Album of the Year, adding an international dimension to her growing career.

Career Development and Major Releases

Jobe followed her debut with Where I Find You in 2012. The album expanded her audience and became her first Grammy-nominated project, receiving a nomination for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album at the 55th Grammy Awards. The Recording Academy continues to list the album among her Grammy-nominated works.

In 2014, she released Majestic, a live album recorded at the historic Majestic Theatre in Dallas. The project marked a significant shift from her earlier studio recordings because it was built entirely around a live worship setting. It included โ€œForever,โ€ which became one of her signature songs, and earned the GMA Dove Award for Worship Album of the Year.

Her next major studio project, The Garden, arrived in 2017. The album was shaped by themes of hope, restoration and finding God in difficult seasons. It continued Jobe’s development as a songwriter while retaining the worship-centred character that had defined her earlier work.

In 2020, Jobe became part of one of the most successful contemporary worship collaborations of the decade with โ€œThe Blessing.โ€ Written by Jobe, her husband Cody Carnes, Chris Brown and Steven Furtick, the song was released with Elevation Worship and quickly spread internationally. Its message of blessing and reassurance resonated particularly strongly during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. The recording received a Grammy nomination and won the GMA Dove Award for Worship Recorded Song of the Year.

Musical Style and Influences

Jobe’s music sits between contemporary Christian music and modern congregational worship. Her recordings generally favour emotional clarity over vocal excess, with arrangements that allow the lyrics to remain central. Piano, guitars, atmospheric production and live-band arrangements frequently support her vocals.

Her approach was shaped by years of leading worship in churches before she became widely known as a recording artist. That background helps explain why many of her songs are written in a way that allows large congregations to sing along easily. At the same time, her performances often carry an intimate quality, giving her music a strong devotional character.

Jobe has described worship as an important source of refuge in her own life and has consistently emphasised the idea that worship should extend beyond a stage or church service. This philosophy is reflected in both her songwriting and her ministry with her husband, Cody Carnes.

Awards, Recognition and Collaborations

Jobe’s career has earned substantial recognition within the Christian music industry. She has received multiple GMA Dove Awards and three Grammy nominations. Her Grammy nominations include Where I Find You in 2013, โ€œThe Blessingโ€ in 2021 and The Blessing (Live) in 2022.

Her collaborations have also played an important role in her career. She has worked with worship artists and Christian musicians including Cody Carnes, Elevation Worship, Chris Tomlin, Michael W. Smith and Lecrae. โ€œThe Blessing,โ€ recorded with Carnes and Elevation Worship, became her most internationally prominent collaboration and introduced her music to listeners far beyond the traditional contemporary Christian audience.

Beyond recordings, Jobe has participated in worship events and ministry settings around the world. Her ability to move between solo performances, collaborative worship and congregational leadership has remained one of the defining features of her career.

Personal Life and Current Career

Kari Jobe married fellow worship leader and songwriter Cody Carnes in November 2014. The couple have two sons, Canyon and Kingston, and now live in Nashville, Tennessee. Jobe and Carnes continue to work together in music and ministry, including serving at their home church, The Belonging Co.

In recent years, Jobe has continued recording, touring and leading worship alongside Carnes. Their shared ministry reflects the direction her career has increasingly taken: creating worship experiences rather than simply producing individual recordings. She remains active in international worship ministry and continues to release and perform music.
