About Kaestrings

Kingsley Innocent Owoicho-Oche, professionally known as Kaestrings, is a Nigerian gospel singer, songwriter, worship leader and acoustic guitarist. He is known for a distinctive approach to contemporary Christian worship that combines intimate vocals, acoustic guitar and simple, meditative songwriting. Although he has released a number of worship songs over the years, he became widely known through โ€œGa Shi Nanโ€, also called โ€œHe Is Hereโ€, a song that grew into a major worship anthem in Nigeria and beyond.

Kaestrings grew up in Zaria, Kaduna State, where his love for music developed through the church. His early musical experiences were closely connected to worship, and he gradually developed his abilities as a singer and instrumentalist. His music has remained closely tied to his Christian faith, with themes of God’s presence, surrender, devotion, mercy and spiritual intimacy appearing throughout his work.

Early Life and Background

Kaestrings was raised in Zaria, a city that has played an important role in shaping his musical identity. In an interview, he described himself as an Idoma person based in Zaria and recalled growing up in a family where music was already part of everyday life. He said all of his siblings sang, giving him an early environment in which music and Christian worship felt natural rather than distant or unfamiliar.

His involvement with music began at a young age, particularly through church. He developed his voice over several years and began deliberately working on his singing from around 2011. By 2013, he was receiving invitations to minister outside his home church, marking an important transition from simply participating in church music to developing a more defined ministry of his own.

Kaestrings also developed a strong connection with the acoustic guitar. His ability to combine the instrument with an understated vocal style eventually became one of the most recognisable characteristics of his music.

Education

Kaestrings studied Fine Arts at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. During his university years, he continued developing both his artistic and musical interests. In a 2017 interview, he identified himself as a Fine Arts student at the university while also working with Eternity Network International, the ministry associated with Koinonia. A later interview described his area of study as Art History within Fine Arts.

His background in Fine Arts is an interesting part of his story because his artistic development has never been limited to music alone. The sensitivity to atmosphere, simplicity and expression evident in his worship style also reflects the broader creative background he developed while studying art.

How His Music Career Started

Although Kaestrings had been singing for years, his recording career took a significant step forward with โ€œGashinaโ€, his first personally recorded song. He explained that the song came to him during a church rehearsal. He had arrived early for the rehearsal and was spending time practising when, during prayer, he began hearing the melody. He took his guitar and recorded the idea on his phone before later developing the song’s verses.

The song was released in an acoustic version in October 2016. โ€œGashinaโ€ is a Hausa expression meaning โ€œHe is hereโ€, and the song focuses on the presence of God among His people. Its simplicity, acoustic arrangement and mixture of Hausa and English helped give it a distinctive character within Nigerian gospel music.

Breakthrough with “Ga Shi Nan”

Kaestrings’ breakthrough came in 2017 when โ€œGa Shi Nanโ€ received major exposure through Nathaniel Bassey’s Hallelujah Challenge. Bassey included the song during the popular praise and worship sessions, introducing Kaestrings’ music to a much larger audience. The response was rapid, and the song became one of the most recognisable worship songs associated with that period.

For Kaestrings, the sudden attention was unexpected. In interviews following the song’s rise, he spoke about being surprised by the scale of its reception and attributed the development to God’s hand rather than simply to conventional music promotion. What began as an acoustic song created in a church rehearsal had moved into a much wider worship culture.

The success of โ€œGa Shi Nanโ€ established Kaestrings as a notable voice in Nigeria’s contemporary gospel scene. Rather than changing completely to accommodate his new audience, he continued building his music around the same intimate worship approach that had characterised his earliest recordings.

Musical Style and Influences

Kaestrings’ music is rooted in contemporary Christian worship but often feels deliberately stripped down. Acoustic guitar, restrained instrumentation, repetition and spacious arrangements are frequently used to create an atmosphere suited to prayer and personal reflection. His vocal delivery is similarly understated, placing emphasis on sincerity and emotional connection rather than vocal display.

Language is another important part of his sound. โ€œGa Shi Nanโ€ incorporates Hausa alongside English, reflecting the northern Nigerian environment in which Kaestrings was raised. His music demonstrates how indigenous language can work naturally within contemporary worship without losing the accessibility of the songs.

He has also spoken about the influence of other musicians on his creative development. In discussing โ€œGashinaโ€, he specifically recalled watching Jeremiah Gyang perform โ€œDan Gataโ€ on YouTube, an experience that influenced the inspiration behind his own song.

Notable Songs and Albums

Following โ€œGa Shi Nanโ€, Kaestrings continued releasing worship music including โ€œLove,โ€ โ€œHaske,โ€ โ€œNasara,โ€ โ€œBrokenโ€ and โ€œTare.โ€ These songs have helped establish the themes that run through his catalogue, particularly surrender, God’s presence, faith and a desire for deeper spiritual intimacy. His official artist profile describes โ€œBrokenโ€ as a song associated with surrender, while โ€œHaskeโ€ and โ€œNasaraโ€ have become part of the body of worship music for which he is known.

His first major album, Rahama (Live), was released on June 12, 2026. The 13-track live project brings together songs including โ€œRahama,โ€ โ€œHaske,โ€ โ€œLet It Show,โ€ โ€œDo a Work in Me,โ€ โ€œBroken,โ€ โ€œTare,โ€ โ€œFear of God,โ€ โ€œMoreโ€ and โ€œWalk on Water.โ€ The project was recorded through his live worship gatherings and presents his music in the communal setting for which his ministry has become known.

The album represents an important stage in Kaestrings’ development. Rather than functioning simply as a collection of studio recordings, Rahama (Live) captures the worship environment that has become central to his artistic identity.

Current Career and Influence

Kaestrings continues to work as a worship minister and recording artist, with his ministry extending beyond conventional music releases. He is associated with Eternity Network International and Koinonia Global, the Christian ministry led by Apostle Joshua Selman, and has served within that worship environment for years.

A major part of his current work is Feast of Light, a live worship and recording gathering through which he continues to develop new music and create spaces centred on worship. His official website describes the gathering as part of his broader vision for capturing new expressions of worship and spiritual renewal.

With the release of Rahama (Live) in 2026, Kaestrings remains active at a time when Nigerian gospel music continues to reach increasingly international audiences. His influence comes less from conventional pop stardom than from the way his songs have travelled through churches, worship gatherings and personal devotional spaces. โ€œGa Shi Nanโ€ in particular established a template for his ministry: simple music, indigenous language, acoustic instrumentation and a strong emphasis on the presence of God. That combination has become central to the identity he has built as Kaestrings.
