Israel Mbonyi was born into a Christian family in Uvira, in the South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His family relocated to Rwanda in 1997, when he was five years old, and he spent most of his childhood and formative years there. He eventually became closely connected with Evangelical Restoration Church in Kigali, where his musical abilities developed through church ministry.
Music became part of Mbonyi’s life at an early age. As a child, he participated in church choirs and learned to play instruments. He has recalled receiving formal music training from a teacher while growing up in Rwanda. According to accounts of his early musical development, he was the only student from a class of about 30 who completed the course and learned to play the guitar.
Although he initially served mainly as an instrumentalist rather than the lead singer, his involvement in church music gave him a foundation in songwriting and worship. He participated in groups including Intumwa za Yesu, a worship group in Nyanza, and Amani, while also developing his own songs.
Mbonyi’s academic path initially pointed toward a career outside music. He studied Pharmacy in India and completed his degree in 2015. During his time there, however, he continued writing and recording gospel music, balancing his academic responsibilities with what was increasingly becoming his calling as a musician.
His years in India were significant for his music because they coincided with the beginning of his professional recording career. While studying, he released “Yankuyeho Urubanza,” a song that helped establish his name among Rwandan gospel listeners. He has explained that even while studying abroad, he continued to write gospel songs and felt strongly that music and Christian ministry were central to his future.
Mbonyi ultimately chose music as his full-time profession rather than pursuing pharmacy as his primary career. His educational background nevertheless remains an unusual part of his story and has frequently been mentioned when discussing his decision to move fully into gospel music.
Mbonyi’s professional music career officially took shape in 2014 with the release of his debut album, Number One. The album introduced a new voice to Rwanda’s gospel scene and contained several songs that would become enduring parts of his catalogue, including “Yankuyeho Urubanza,” “Ku Migezi,” “Nzibyo Nibwira,” “Ku Musaraba,” “Ndanyuzwe,” “Hari Impamvu” and “Agasambi.”
The response to the album established him as one of the promising young gospel artists in Rwanda. His music was notable for its emphasis on personal worship and testimony, while his ability to accompany himself on instruments added another dimension to his performances.
His early success also came while he was still completing his studies in India. This unusual combination of academic life abroad and a rapidly developing music career helped distinguish his early story from that of many artists in the Rwandan gospel scene.
Following Number One, Mbonyi released Intashyo in 2017. The project expanded his audience and strengthened his position within Rwandan gospel music. Songs such as “Nzaririmba” and “Ku Marembo Y’Ijuru” became part of the catalogue that listeners associated with his distinctive worship style.
His career continued to develop through a series of releases and live recordings. Among his later projects are Hari Ubuzima, Mbwira and Umusirikare. His 2023 album Umusirikare was particularly important in the expansion of his audience, with songs such as “Nina Siri,” “Tugumane” and “Baho” receiving significant attention.
“Nina Siri” became one of the most recognizable songs of this period. Its popularity helped introduce Mbonyi’s music to listeners beyond Rwanda and contributed to his increasing visibility among Swahili-speaking Christian audiences in East Africa. By 2024, he had completed a decade as a professional recording artist.
Mbonyi’s music is firmly rooted in gospel and worship, with songwriting that frequently centers on God’s faithfulness, salvation, dependence on God and personal testimony. His songs are primarily associated with Kinyarwanda, although he has increasingly incorporated Swahili into his work.
His catalogue includes “Number One,” “Yankuyeho Urubanza,” “Ku Migezi,” “Nzibyo Nibwira,” “Ndanyuzwe,” “Nzaririmba,” “Baho,” “Nina Siri,” “Tugumane” and “Ku Marembo Y’Ijuru.” These songs demonstrate the progression of his music from the Kinyarwanda gospel tradition toward a broader East African worship sound.
In 2023, Mbonyi began exploring Swahili gospel more deliberately. He later explained that the idea came to him through a dream while he was preparing Umusirikare. This opened another chapter in his career, allowing him to communicate with a wider audience across East Africa and beyond.
Mbonyi’s rise has been accompanied by recognition from Rwanda’s gospel and music-awards community. Early in his career, he received Groove Awards recognition, including the Best Male Artist award in 2015. He was also recognized as a Rwandan artist performing outside the country during his period of study in India.
He later won the Best Gospel Artist category at the Salax Awards in 2018, further confirming his position among Rwanda’s leading gospel performers. His music has also received recognition through other nominations and awards during his career.
Beyond formal awards, one of the clearest measures of his success has been the size and consistency of his live audience. His concerts have attracted large crowds in Rwanda and other parts of East Africa, while songs such as “Nina Siri” have extended his reach to listeners outside his original Kinyarwanda-speaking audience.
Mbonyi remains active as a recording artist and worship minister. His discography has expanded considerably in recent years through albums, singles, collaborations and live projects. In 2024 and 2025, he released a growing collection of Swahili material, including Sikiliza, Kaa Nami (Live), Hobe (Live), Nimezikumbuka (Live), Sitamuacha (Live) and other live recordings.
His most recent release is “Unigeukie (Live),” released on April 18, 2026. The eight-minute live recording continues his recent emphasis on Swahili worship and live performance.
Another major part of Mbonyi’s current career is the Icyambu concert series. The annual Christmas event has developed into one of his signature platforms, bringing together large audiences for extended worship performances. The name “Icyambu,” which means “bridge,” has also taken on personal significance for Mbonyi, reflecting his belief that his music can serve as a bridge between believers and between different parts of the East African gospel community.
