Chidinma Ekile is a Nigerian singer and songwriter whose career has taken her from mainstream Afropop to contemporary gospel music. Born on May 2, 1991, in Ketu, Lagos State, she first became widely known after winning the third season of Project Fame West Africa in 2010. Her victory introduced her to a national audience and launched a successful pop career that produced songs such as “Kedike”, “Emi Ni Baller”, “Jankoliko” and “Oh! Baby (You & I)”. She later became known as a gospel artist following a major change in musical direction in 2021.
Chidinma’s career is notable for the contrast between its two major chapters. During her first decade in the industry, she established herself as one of Nigeria’s prominent female Afropop singers, earning the 2012 Kora Award for Best Female West African Act. In 2021, she publicly announced that she was leaving secular music to concentrate on gospel music and Christian ministry. Since then, she has released projects including New Season, Psalm 16 and The Road Best Travelled, while signing with EeZee Conceptz Global and building a new identity around gospel music.

Chidinma Ekile was born in Ketu, Lagos State, to parents from Imo State. She grew up in a family of seven children and began singing at the age of six. By the time she was 10, she had joined her church choir, giving her an early foundation in vocal performance and Christian music.
She spent her early years in Ketu before moving with her family to Ikorodu. Her childhood was not centred around the expectation of becoming a professional musician. In fact, she initially had ambitions outside entertainment and wanted to study mass communication. Before her breakthrough, she worked as a business promoter in Lagos.
Music nevertheless remained an important part of her life. Her church background gave her an opportunity to develop her voice, while the wider musical environment in Lagos exposed her to different styles. She has cited artists including Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Fela Kuti, Omawumi, Onyeka Onwenu, Lagbaja and Darey Art Alade among her musical influences.
Chidinma’s professional career changed dramatically in 2010 when she auditioned for the third season of Project Fame West Africa. She was among thousands of people who auditioned for the competition and eventually became one of the contestants selected for the Fame Academy.
Over the course of the competition, she received training in vocals, performance, choreography and other aspects of the music business. On September 26, 2010, she was announced as the winner, becoming the first female winner of Project Fame West Africa. Her prize included โฆ2.5 million, a 2011 Toyota RAV4 and a recording deal.
Winning the competition transformed Chidinma from an aspiring singer into a national celebrity. It also gave her the platform to pursue music professionally, even though she had initially viewed education as her primary path. She subsequently continued her studies at the University of Lagos, where she earned a degree in sociology.
Following Project Fame, Chidinma began releasing music professionally. Her first major solo single was “Jankoliko”, featuring Sound Sultan, released in 2011. She followed it with songs including “Kedike” and “Run Dia Mouth”, establishing the musical identity that would dominate the first phase of her career.
“Kedike”, which means “heartbeat”, became one of Chidinma’s signature songs. Produced by Cobhams Asuquo, the track presented her as a romantic Afropop singer and demonstrated the strength and versatility of her voice. Its popularity helped earn her the nickname “Miss Kedike”.
Her profile grew further with “Emi Ni Baller”, featuring Tha Suspect and IllBliss. The song’s success made Chidinma the first female musician to reach number one on the MTV Base Official Naija Top 10 chart. She also became a regular presence at major Nigerian concerts and performed alongside some of the country’s biggest artists.
During this period, she released her self-titled debut album, Chidinma. The album included “Jankoliko”, “Carry You Go”, “Kedike” and “Run Dia Mouth”, and established her as one of the notable female voices of the new generation of Nigerian pop music.
Chidinma’s early sound was primarily built around Afropop, R&B and Nigerian pop, with a strong emphasis on melody and vocals. Her ability to combine a powerful voice with accessible pop songwriting helped her stand apart from many of her contemporaries.
Her collaborations during this period further broadened her audience. She worked with artists including Sound Sultan, Flavour, IllBliss and Tha Suspect, while also sharing stages with major Nigerian acts at concerts and tours across Africa. Her collaboration with Flavour on “Oh! Baby (You & I)” became another notable entry in her catalogue.
Chidinma’s musical influences also reflected the breadth of her sound. International artists such as Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Alicia Keys and Bob Marley influenced her, while Nigerian and African musicians including Fela Kuti, Onyeka Onwenu, Lagbaja and Omawumi helped shape her appreciation for local musical traditions.
Chidinma received significant recognition during her Afropop years. In 2012, she won the Kora Award for Best Female West African Act, becoming one of the youngest Nigerian artists to receive the honour at the time. She performed “Kedike” at the ceremony in Abidjan, Cรดte d’Ivoire, and received her award from former Ivorian football captain Didier Drogba.
She also won Best Pop Extra Video at the 2013 Nigeria Music Video Awards for “Emi Ni Baller”. Other major award organisations recognised her work through nominations, including The Headies, Nigeria Entertainment Awards, MTV Africa Music Awards, Channel O Music Video Awards and City People Entertainment Awards.
Beyond awards, her impact during this period could be seen in her growing presence across Africa. She performed in countries including Benin, Sierra Leone, Cรดte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Niger and Ghana, extending her popularity beyond Nigeria.
In 2021, Chidinma made one of the most significant decisions of her career when she announced that she was leaving secular music to focus on gospel music and Christian ministry. The transition represented a return to the Christian musical roots of her childhood, when she had sung in church.
She introduced this new chapter with “Jehovah Overdo”, released in May 2021. The song was produced by EeZee Tee and presented a noticeably different direction from the Afropop music for which she had previously been known. Her public rebrand also made it clear that the change was more than a simple shift in musical style. She was repositioning her career around her Christian faith and ministry.
Later that year, she released her first gospel project, New Season. The seven-track EP was produced entirely by EeZee Tee and marked her formal arrival in the Nigerian gospel scene. The project was followed by Psalm 16, an eight-track album released in October 2022, featuring collaborations with artists including KS Bloom, Indira and Buchi.
Chidinma’s gospel journey continued with The Road Best Travelled, released on March 7, 2025. The album deepened the themes that had emerged in her earlier gospel work, focusing on faith, divine direction, God’s grace and personal testimony. The project includes songs such as “I’m In Love”, “I Recommend Jesus”, “Jehovah” and “Jesus”.
Her partnership with EeZee Conceptz Global has become an important part of this second chapter. The label describes Chidinma as an award-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter who transitioned fully into gospel music in 2021, and her work with the label has placed her alongside some of the leading names in contemporary African gospel.
Chidinma’s career is unusual in Nigerian popular music because of the scale of her transformation. She first became famous as an Afropop singer after winning a major television talent competition, built a successful mainstream catalogue and earned continental recognition, then voluntarily redirected her career toward gospel music and Christian ministry. Rather than simply adding gospel songs to an established pop career, she made faith the centre of her new artistic identity.

PromoteThat transition has given Chidinma a distinctive place in Nigerian gospel music. Her story connects two different eras of her career while showing how her earliest musical foundation in church eventually became central to her professional identity. From “Kedike” to “Jehovah Overdo” and The Road Best Travelled, her music reflects a journey from mainstream stardom toward a more explicitly faith-driven form of artistic and personal expression.
